Note: This article includes information provided by Joan Danos' email of 27 Nov 2016.

1. Charles Prentiss may have been born c. 1785 to 1795. The 1880 census for his daughter, Sophia, indicates he was b. in MA. Charles died sometime between 1863 (birthdate of his son, Stonewall) and 1870, probably in LA, because his wife, Hannah, appears in the 1870 census without him.

He m. Hannah, widow of Charles, who was b. c. 1794 in MA. 1970 census in New Orleans, LA. She appears in the 1870 New Orleans, Orleans Co., LA census with a female who is likely her daughter. Her obituary in the 14 Nov 1877 Daily Picayune reads as follows:

"On Wednesday morning, Nov 14, 1877 at half past 2 o'clock in the 86th year of her life (b. c. 1791), Mrs HANNAH PRENTISS, a native of Newtown (Newton?), Mass, and a resident of this city for the past 27 years.

Who Is Charles Prentiss and who are his parents?

We know from Joan Danos' email of 27 Nov 2016 that Hannah was the widow of "Charles Prentiss" and made an informed estimate the he might have been born about 1790. An Ancestry.com search gave a listing for a "Charles Prentiss" who married a "Hannah Morse Stedman," but there were no dates or places given for their births, marriages, or deaths.

An LDS search for those names found an entry for a "Hannah Stedman" in "MA Marriages" who married a "Charles Printis" on 4 July 1811 in Andover, Essex Co., MA. Hannah's obituary had mentioned that Hannah was "a native of Newtown (Newton?), Mass, and a resident of [New Orleans] for the past 27 years."

Hannah Stedman and Charles Prentiss/Printis had a daughter, "Susan Garrett Prentiss", born about 1826, in Kentucky who married Henry James Osborne in 1835 in Kentucky. She died on February 16, 1891, in Augusta, Georgia, at the age of 65, and was buried there.

It is an interesting coincidence because Hannah Prentice, widow of Charles in New Orleans, LA, had a daughter, Sophia Anna Prentice who was born in July 1826 in KY. So, it strikes us that Susan Garrett Prentiss (born c. 1826, KY) may be a sister to Sophia Anna Prentice (b. July 1826 in KY).
