We found the family of Samual Prentice in English census records for the years 1841 through 1901 and have added information from Ancestry.com . Here is what we have so far:

1. Samuel Prentice, b. 12 Dec 1797, Newland Street-Independent, Witham, Essex Co., England, per IGI. He is quite likely the Samuel Prentice who was living in Witham, Essex, in 1831 where his son, Thomas, was born. He may have d. before 1851 as his wife appears in the 1851 census as Mary Thompson.

He m. Mary. She was b. c. 1802, Maldon, Essex. She appears in the 1851 census in Witham as Mary Thompson with her husband, William Thompson, b. c. 1806, Witham, and Mary's daughter, Lucy (see below).

They had 1 or more children, including:

1. Harriott Prentice, dau., b. c. 1826, Essex. At home in 1841. Not in 1851 census by that surname. She might be the Harriet Prentice shown in the St. Catherine Index as marrying in the December Quarter of 1849.
2. James Prentice, b. c. 1826, Essex. At home in 1841. Not in 1851 or 1861 census.

She may be the Lucy Prentice of Witham shown in the St. Catherine Index as marrying in the 1854 June Quarter. Not in 1861 census by that surname. She might be in the 1861 census as:
   • Lucy Tuff, b. c. 1832, Withim, wife of Arthur Tuff.
   • Lucy Claydon, b. c. 1833, Witham, wife of Peter Claydon.

The 1861 Witham census shows a William Prentice, age 8 and b. c. 1853, Witham, Essex. He is called a grandson of William and Mary Thompson of Witham and may also be a grandson or great grandson of John Prentice of Witham.

Living with Mary and William Thompson in the 1871 census was a grandson, Alexander W. Prentice, b. c. 1853, Witham. He would be a son of either James (b. c. 1826) or Thomas (b. c. 1831).

2. Thomas Prentice, b. 1831, Witham, Essex. England. The "Witham" location comes from the 1851 and later census records; the earlier 1841 census designated only counties but not towns. 1861 and 1871 census in Hampstead. Not in 1881 census.

There seems a good chance that he is the son or grandson of John Prentice (b. c. 1730) and Sarah Bartlett discussed in our Spring 2006 article entitled John Prentice of Witham, Essex, England, and New York City, USA .

John Prentice married in 1771 and rented a portion of the "Model Farm" at Witham, Essex. He had about 8 children born at Within between 1772 and about 1811, names unknown except for John Prentice, b. 11 Apr 1772, and perhaps Edmund Prentice, b. c. 1811.

The IGI indicates says he is a son of Thomas and Mary Prentice, so Thomas might be a son of John Prentice and Sarah Bartlett of Witham..

The St. Catherine's Index provides the following list of names of other children born in Witham. It seems likely that at least some of them are siblings of each other and/or descendants of John Prentice, b. c. 1772 in Witham and pernaps kin of Thomas Prentice of Withim who was b. c. 1856.
