Augustus Prentice of NY and Flint, Genesee Co., Michigan

Augustus Prentice of NY and Flint, Genesee Co., Michigan
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Spring 2010 and Revised 1 Jan 2010

We ae helping Eloise R. Ramirez in tracing her Prentice roots. Here is what we have so far:

1. Augustus K. Prentice was b. c. 1847 in NY, as were his parents according to the 1880 census in Flint, Genesee Co., MI, where he appears with his wife and family. Curiously, he does not appear in the earlier 1850, 1860 or 1870 census, nor does he appear in the 1900 census, 1910 census, IGI or Ancestry.com families segment.

He m. Frances "Frankie" J. Silsbe on 30 Nov 1876, Genesee Co., MI.when she was about 19 or 20 per Genesee Vitals/Marriage .

Frances was b. c. 1856-57, Flint, Genesee Co., MI. In the 1880 Flint census they are living with her parents James Silsbe (b. c. 1825, NY, as were his parents) and Lydia (b. c. 1825, Canada. with her father b. in NH and mother in NY). Son:

  1. James Prentice, b. c. 1878, MI. At home in Flint, MI, in the 1880 census. . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]

2. James M. Prentice, b. c. 1878, Flint, Genesee Co., MI, and d. 2 Jan 1916 in Munising, Alger Co., MI. His Death Certificate shows death from alcoholism. It listedhis occupation as "Physician," but he apparently traveled with his "Medicine Show wagon. At home in Flint, MI, in the 1880 census. No James Prentice with that birth date and place is shown in later census records.

He m. 1st Unknown. He m. 2nd Loretta Ross on 23 Feb 1911, Sioux Falls, Minnehaha Co., SD. She was b. 1888 in Iowa and d. 18 Nov 1957 in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha Co., SD. Her father was b. in WI and mother in IA or IL. James and Loretta (Eloise's great grandmother) had a daughter:

  1. Frances Josephine Prentice, dau., b. 22 Jun 1912. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [3]

James and Loretta are said to have divorced (but if so, it would have been before his 2 Jan 1916 death) and Loretta m. 2nd Roy G. Pierce about 1916.

  • The 1920 Sioux Falls, Minnehaha Co., census shows her name as Laura Pierce and shows Roy as b. c 1886, SD. It is unclear whether he is the Roy G. Pierce shown in the SSDI as b. 18 Dec 1897 and d. 1 Jul 1966 in Belle Plaine,Sumner Co., KS.

  • The 1930 Sioux Falls census also shows here name as Laura Pierce with Laura and Roy's children:
    1. Frances Prentice, dau., b. c. 1912, SD (same as 1920 Laura Pierce). At home in 1930.
    2. Irma Pierce, b. c. 1920, SD At home in 1930.
    3. Bruce Pierce, b. c.1929, SD. At home in 1930. Not in 2009 SSDI.

3. Frances Josephine Prentice, dau., b. 22 Jun 1912 (or 28 Jul 1915 per Ancestry.com , Minneapolis, MN, and d. Mar 1975 in Sioux Falls, SD. Not in SSDI. She appears in the 1920 census in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha Co., SD, as Frances Pierce living with her mother and step-father, Roy G. Pierce.

She m. Harry Melvin Erickson. He was b. 2 Sep 1906, SD, and d. 23 Mar 1981, Lennox, Lincoln Co., SD. He was the son of Erik E. Erickson and Martha E. Young. An Ancestor Chart for Harry can be found at Ancestry.com ,

Eloise R. Ramirez relates that Frances had 6 children, 5 of which are still living in 2009, including Harriet, Eloise's mother, the oldest of the 6 children. The family listing in Ancestry.com shows only 5 children:

  1. (son) Erickson.
  2. (dau.) Erickson.
  3. (son) Erickson.
  4. (son) Erickson.
  5. (dau.) Erickson. She m. Carl Parmley. He was b. 1 ASpr 1929, Canistota, McCook Co., SD, and d. 3 Jan 1988, Chancellor, Lincoln Co., SD. Children per Ancestry.com :
    1. (dau.) Parmley. Her marriage and children are in Ancestry.com .
    2. (son) Parmley. He m. Miss Huffard.
    3. (dau.) Parmley.
    4. (dau.) Parmley. She m. Mr. Konda and had 2 sons and a daughter.
    5. (dau.) Parlmley. She m. 1st Mr. Murphy. She m. 2nd Mr. Reichert and had 3 daughters.
    6. (son) Parmley.

Because Loretta grew up not knowing her father, James, Eloise's mother, Harriet, would appreciate any information on that branch of her tree, including whether James had any other children by his first wife or any others by Loretta or other wife.
