    Havering lies about 10-12 miles ESE of Chelmsford. William appears in the 1841 census living at Blake Cottages, Toothill Lane, in Stanford Rivers, Essex, as an Agricultural Labourer with his wife and family. Stanford Rivers lies about 10 miles north of Havering. (Ref: Ancestry.com )

    He m. Ann Barnard, b. c. Jan 1805, Abbess Roding, Essex, and d. Jul 1874, Stanford Rivers, Essex. She was the dau. of William Barnard (b. c. 1780) and Mary Willson (b. c. 1780). Children per 1841 census, Rod Garland, email, 25 Nov 2010, and Ancestry.com :

    1. Elizabeth Prentice, b. c. 1826-27, Stanford Rivers, and d. 1876; her death registered at Tendring, 1876 Jul-Sep Vol. 4a, pg. 181. She appears in the 1851 Fulham, Middlesex, census as a Servant in the home of Charles and Ann Smith.

      She m. John Wilfred Sadler at The Strand per 1855 Vol. 16, pg. 604. He was b. c. 1828, Leake, Yorkshire, and d. 15 Mar 1889, Woolwich, Kent, with his death registered in Woolwich, Kent, 1889, Vol. 1d, Pg. 760.

      We have conflicting information about his parents and roots.

        One source says John was the son of Elizabeth Sadler, who appears in the 1841 census as b. c. 1791, Leake, Yorkshire, a Tanner in the Leather Industry and living in the twp. of Guildale, near Bireforth (about 10 km south of Thirsk on the A19) in the registration of Northallerton, Yorkshire.

        Ancestry.com shows a more complete family tree.

      John Sadler appears in the 1851 census as an unmarried lodger at 4 Prince's St., St. Andrews Holborn, Middlesex. The 1861 census shows John W Sadler aged 33 yrs a Licensed Victualler born in Leake, Yorkshire was living at 18 Clifton Road "The Clifton Arms", Marleybone, Middlesex, which was a public house. With him were his wife and children.

      John Wilfred Sadler appears in the 1881 census as age 53yrs, a Widower and Licensed Victualler, living at 20 Plumstead Road, Kent with daughter Elizabeth 21 yrs born in St Pancras, Middlesex, son Wilfred 19 yrs born in Marleybone, son Walter 13 yrs born in \ Plumstead and daughter Alice 10 yrs born in Plumstead. Also shown is Frederick Austin 19 yrs a Servant and Coalman and Mary Cox 21 yrs a Cook and Domestic Servant

      The Kent 1882 Post Office Directory Listing shows John li ving at "The Burrage Arms," 20 Plumstead Road.

      Living with the family in 1861 was a sister-in-law, Mary Prentice (Elizabeth's sister), b. c. 1826, a servant born at Stanford Rivers, Essex.

    2. William Prentice, b. c. 1828, Stanford Rivers, Essex, which lies about 3 miles SW of Chipping Ongar and perhaps 15 miles WSW of Chelmsford, Essex. Although not shown in the IGI, he appears in the 1861 census in West Ham, Essex and in the 1871 Romford, Barking, St. Margarets census as a Labourer living at 4a Union St., Barking with his wife, Mary Ann, b. c. 1829, Barking, Essex. They later appear in the 1891 census in Barking, Essex. Son per 1871 census:

The family emigrated to Melbourne, Australia, aboard the "Castillian" in June, 1857, as assisted British Migrants.
