Unknown Prentice of Versailles, Ripley Co., Indiana

Unknown Prentice of Versailles, Ripley Co., Indiana
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2005 and Revised 5 Jun 2005

1. Louise Tolson, apparently her married name, was b. c. 1830, PA. She appears as a widow in the 1900 census in Versailles, Ripley Co., IN with the following children:

  1. Mary Tolson, b. Nov 1863, IN
  2. Fanny (Tolson?) Prentice (sp. Printice), b. Feb. 1865, IN. . . . . . . [2]
  3. Shirley Bell Prentice (sp. Sherley Printice), b. Mar 1883, IN. For more on her, see #2, below.

It is unclear from the census entries whether Louise had 2 marriages: first to a Mr. Tolson, and second to a Mr. Prentice. However, since Fanny Prentice was younger than Mary Tolson, it seems less than likely that Louise would still be carrying the Tolson surname in the 1900 census. The more likely scenario is that Fanny Prentice had a maiden surname of Tolson and m. a Mr. Prentice, and we proceed on that hypothesis in #2, below.

2. Fanny (Tolson?) Prentice (sp. Printice), was b. Feb. 1865, IN. Although we do not yet have confirmation, it seems likely that her maiden surname was "Tolson" and that she m. a Mr. Prentice about 1881 or 1882 and had:

  1. Shirley Bell Prentice (sp. Sherley Printice), b. Mar 1883, IN. . . . . . [3]

Ripley Co. marriage records show that a Fanny Prentice, perhaps the same person, m. John W. Harris, perhaps as a 2nd husband, on 23 Sep 1902, Wayne Co., IN (per Indiana Marriages.

3. Shirley Bell Prentice (sp. Sherley Printice), b. Mar 1883, IN (per 1900 census). In the 1900 census she is called a "Daughter", but it is unclear whether she was a dau. of Louise Tolson or a dau. of Fanny Prentice.

According to Ancestry.com she was b. 4 Mar 1884 in Versailles, Ripley Co., IN and d. 20 Jan 1968. Bur. West Lawn Cemetery, Hagerstown, IN.

Shirley m. Joel H. Stonecipher on 4 Dec 1904. He was b. 25 Oct 1875, Henry Co., IN, and d. 27 Nov 1933 in Hagerstown, IN. An Ancestor Chart for him can be found at Ancestry.com. According to a newspaper account of his death:

J.H. STONECIPHER FATALLY INJURED BY FALLING TREE

Retired Business Man Was Formerly Deputy State Fire Marshal - HAGERSTOWN,Ind.Nov.27. Joel H Stonecipher,56years old, a prominent retired-business man and formerly a deputy state fire marshal, was killed some time this afternoon when a large beech tree he was cutting in the Hartley woods adjoining Hartley Hills country club, fell upon him. After an examination of the body Dr. R.L Hiatt, county coroner, reached the decision that Mr. Stonecipher had died from internal injuries. He was inclined to discount a theory that Mr.Stonecipher had been stricken by heart disease before the tree fell upon him. As had been his custom for serveral years Mr. Stonecipher went to Hartley Woods today for the purpose of cutting fire wood. His failure to return home at noon caused no apprehension on the part of members of his family, when he failed to return home at 5:30 o'clock this afternoon, however, his son Gene went to the woods and found his father's body face downward, beneath the huge tree he had been alternately chopping and sawing. It was suposed that Mr. Stonecipher might have tripped and fallen as the tree toppled over.

The body was taken to a Cambridge City funeral home for burial preparation. The body will be taken to the resident Tuesday afternoon, at which time friends may call. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. For a number of years Mr. Stonecipher operated a drug store in Hagerstown, where he was born. Always active republican politics Mr. Stonecipher was appointed Deputy State Fire Marshal by Governor Leslie, serving for about two years, until the close of the Leslie administration, the first of this year. He was an active member of the Christian Church, the Masons, Knights of Pythias and Odd Fellows.

Mr. Stonecipher is survived by the widow, Mrs.Shirley Stonecipher, the son Gene, a daughter, Miss Barbara; a sister, Mrs.Lydia Braddock, Millville; two brothers, Charles of Hagerstown, Clinton, Cambridge City. Mr. Stonecipher was one of the best known residentsof Western Wayne County.
