1. Sylvanus B. Prentis was b. c. 1799-1800 in New London, CT and was bur. 19 Jul 1871 in the Ceder Grove Cemetery, New London. He appears in the 1840 New London cenus and in the 1859-60 New London Directory as "Capt. Sylvanus B. Prentice, h (home?) 79 Main-st." He also later appears in the 1870 census in New Rochelle,Westchester Co., NY and in the 1870 census in New York, New York Co., NY, as a "Sea Captain" with his wife and son, George, below.

Sylvanus m. Mary A. Godfrey in New York City on 4 May 1826. She was b. c. 1810-20 and she, too, is bur. in the Ceder Grove Cemetery.. Children (per 1840 New London census):

  1. Daughter Prentis, b. c. 1825-30. She might be Elizabeth Prentis; see George Prentis, below.
  2. James C. Prentice, b. c. 1829, CT. . . . . . . . . . [2]
  3. Robert Swain Prentis, b. c. 1835-40 (per 1840 census). He m. 1st Madeline Clements Johnson on 26 Sep 1879 in Manhattan, New York Co., NY (per IGI). After Madeline died, Robert m. 2nd Ella Forfey per Benjamin Prentiss, email, 12 Aug 2013.
  4. George Prentis, b. c. 1843 and d. 11 Jun 1889. . . . . . . . . . [3]
  5. Arthur G.(?) Prentis, b. c. 1856, CT (per 1870 census). Not in 1880, 1910 or 1920 census.

2. James C. Prentis, b. c. 1829, CT who m. Emma, b. 1840, CT (as were both her parents) and d. 8 May 1918. They appear in the 1880 New London census where James is identified as a Sailor. His birth year range and occupationsuggest he may also be a son of Sylvanus and Mary. He is bur. in the Ceder Grove Cemetery in New London, CT.

3. George Prentis, b. c. 1843 and d. 11 Jun 1889. Called "of New York City." He is probably the George W. Prentice, Bookkeeper, shown in the 1870 New York City census who was b. c. 1843 in CT (with both parents b. in CT) and whose wife is identified as Georgianna, b. c. 1844, NY. George is bur in the Ceder Grove Cemetery, New London, CT.

Living with George and his wife in the 1880 New York City census was Elizabeth Cranston, called a sister to George, who was b. c. 1831 in CT. She could be the daughter of Sylvanus shown, above, as b. c. 1825-30.
