Prentices of Todenham, Gloucester, England

Prentices of Todenham, Gloucester, England
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Spring 2003 and Revised 2 Dec 2005

In reviewing the IGI, and working with John Hughes, the following Prentice families are shown for Todenham, Gloucester, England:

Family 1: Michael Prentice

1. Michael Prentice was b. c. 1737 at an unknown location, but called "of Todenham," m. Jane Bennett on 17 Jul 1762 in Todenham. Children:

  1. Josias Prentice, chr. 21 Dec 1762, Todenham.
  2. Mary Prentice, b. not later than 1765 and d. 1765 (per John Hughes, email, 24 Jan 2002, citing church transcript in his possession).
  3. John Prentice, chr. 27 Jan 1766 and bur. 14 Feb 1766 (per John Hughes, email, 24 Jan 2002, citing church transcript in his possession).
  4. John Prentice, chr. 28 Mar 1767, Todenham.
  5. Michael Prentice, chr. 14 Jun 1769, Todenham. He leased a property in Stratford in 1827 on Chapel Street. His Will (1837) bequeaths the property to his sister, Mary. We can assume he died that year. In 1838 Mary soldthe property and served notice to the occupant, Elizabeth Prentice, to vacate the premises. Elizabeth may have been Michael's wife.
  6. Mary Prentice, chr. 11 Mar 1772, Todenham. . . . . . . . [2]
  7. Zachariah Prentice, chr. 1775 (per Jayne Willerton, email, 2 Dec 2005)

Based only on similarity of names and dates, there is a possibility that perhaps Michael Prentice of Todenham is the Michael Prentice who is #9(i) in our Spring 1999 article about Zachariah Prentice of Boorkings, SD article. The "c. 1737" date we have for Michael in the Todenham article is only a rule-of-thumb estimate and could be off several years.

2. Mary Prentice, chr. 11 Mar 1772, Todenham and d. 1858 in Stratford-Upon_Avon at the age of 86. Mary m. John Wyatt on 3 Mar 1794 in Clifford Chambers, England. He was b. 1774 in Todenham and d. before 1851. Mary's brother, Michael, had leased a property in Stratford in 1827 on Chapel Street. His Will (1837) bequeaths the property to Mary. We can assume he died that year. Mary sells the property in 1838 and, accordingly, serves notice to the occupant Elizabeth Prentice to vacate the premises. In 1851, Mary was a widow living with 2 granddaughers who were daughters of Mary’s daughter Jane Wyatt.

John Hughes has provided the following information from documents from the Stratford Record office concerning Mary (Prentice) Wyatt:

  1. 1 Jan 1827: Lease of a cottage to Michael Prentice in Chapel St ER2/319&320
  2. 1837: Mary Wyatt is named as the owner of the cottage in the will of her brother Michael Prentice.
  3. 1838: Mary Wyatt sells the property in Chapel St to Edward Leyton
  4. 24 Mar 1838: Mary Wyatt serves notice on Elizabeth Prentice to quit the property in Chapel St. It is unclear who Elizabeth Prentice is.
  5. In the 1851 Gloucestershire census, Mary (Prentice) Wyatt, then 79, was living with her granddaughters, daughters of Jane Wyatt who had m. Edmund Cockbill.

Mary Prentice and John Wyatt had the following children:

  1. John Wyatt, b. 1795 in Clifford Chambers, Gloucester. John died in 1795 in Clifford Chambers, Gloucester. Buried on 16 June 1795 in Clifford Chambers, Gloucester. Christened on 13 May 1795 in Clifford Chambers.

  8. Sarah Wyatt, b. 1803 in Clifford Chambers and chr. there 7 Oct 1803.

    1. Elizabeth Cockbill, chr. 2 Feb 1833, Clifford Chambers.
    2. Jane Cockbill, chr. 25 Jun 1834, Clifford Chambers.
It is unclear what happened to Jane Wyatt and Edmund Hughes Cockbill as neither appear in the 1851 census with her mother and her daughters.
  10. William Wyatt, b. 1809 and d. 1869. . . . . . . . . . [3]

  5. John Hadrian Hughes (1968-). He m. Susan Ruth Whitteker (1971-)

Family 2: Zachariah Prentice

1. Zachariah Prentice was b. c. 1732-42 at an unknown location, but called "of Todenham." He m. Elizabeth at an unknown date and loction. She is proably the Elizabeth Prentice who was b. c. 1735 and was bur. in Todenham on 2 Oct 1807 at the age of 71.

There is also a chance that Zachariah Prentice, who heads Family 2 in Todenham, and had sons John and Thomas, just might be the Zachariah Prentice who is #13 in our our Spring 1999 article about Zachariah Prentice of Boorkings, SD.

Sons of Zachariah and Elizabeth of Todenham shown in the IGI:

  1. Zachariah Prentice, chr. 19 Jul 1764, Todenham.
  2. John Prentice, chr. 5 Nov 1766, Todenham.
  3. Ruth Prentice, chr 1768, Todenham (per John Hughes, email, 24 Jan 2002, citing church transcript in his possession).
  4. Thomas Prentice, chr. 6 Jun 1772, Todenham.

Family 3: Zachariah Prentice

1. Zachariah Prentice, b. c. 1732-50 at an unknown location, but called "of Todenham." He m. Betty Rouse/Kouse on 27 Aug 1762 at Todenham. This seems to be a different Zachariah from that shown in Family 2, above, since the christening dates of the children overlap.

There is also a chance that Zachariah Prentice, who heads Family 3 in Todenham, just might be the Zachariah Prentice who is #8(ii) in our our Spring 1999 article about Zachariah Prentice of Boorkings, SD.

Son of this Zachariah Prentice of Todenham shown in the IGI:

  1. Richard Prentice, chr. 19 Dec 1768, Todenham.
