George Prentice of Scotland and Herminie, PA
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Spring 2004 and Revised 23 Nov 2009

Update of 6 Jul 2014: George Prentice is #33 in our Summer 2000 Prentice Newsletter article about "Thomas Prentice of Livingston, W. Lothian, Scotland. That article now replaces this article.

1. George Prentice was likely b. c. 1880-1885 in Scotland and perhaps in, or near, Glasgow or Edinburgh. At some date prior to 20 Nov 1924 he emigrated to the United States and in 1924 lived at 28 Church St., Herminie, PA

His wife, Mary Prentice, appears in Ellis Island records as departing Glasgow aboard the "Assyria" and arriving at the Port of New York on 20 Nov 1924. She was then age 39, and b. c. 1885, Lanark, Scotland. Her last permanent address had been Edinburgh, Scotland. She was described as 5' 3", dark complexion, dark hair, and brown eyes. Her destination was to join her husband in Herminie, PA. Children accompanying her were:

  1. Alexander Prentice, b. c. 1913, Middlesex, Scotland. At home in 1930 census. It is unclear whether he is the Alexander Prentice shown in the SSDI as b. 27 Jun 1915, obtained his SS# in PA, and d. 30 Apr 2003 in Galeton, Potter Co., PA. If so, his wife might be the Helen Prentice shown in the SSDI as b. 28 Apr 1919, obtained her SS# in PA, and d. Nov 1985 in Galeton, Potter Co., PA.

  2. William Prentice, b. c. 1922, , S. Queensferry, Scotland. which lay just west of Edinburgh. At home in 1930 census.

  3. Agnes Prentice, b. c. 1827, PA (per 1930 census)

George and his family later appear in the 1930 census in the town of Indiana, Allegheny Co, PA.
