George Prentice of Canada and Rochester, Monroe Co., NY

George Prentice of Canada and Rochester, Monroe Co., NY
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Winter 2004 and Revised 24 Jul 2015

1. George W. Prentice was b. c. 1848 in Canada, with both parents b. in Canada. We do not yet know when he emigrated to the United States, but we know that he was in NY by 1871 when his daughter, Jennie, was born. He later appears in the 1880 census in Rochester, Monroe Co., NY, with his wife and family. George was a Locomotive Engineer. In 1875 he was listed as a farmer.

George does not appear in the 1900, 1910 or 1920 census, and there is a possibility that he returned to Canada with his family although he does not appear in the 1901 or 1911 Canada census.

He m. Sophia Kerr, b. 28 Oct 1845, NY, and d. 28 Apr 1895 at the age of 49 years of Pulmonary Phthsis. She is bur at Mt. Hope Cem., Rochester, Section 4, Range 3, Lot 126. Sophia's Mother and Father were born in Canada per Census. For Sophia Kerr's roots, see Fn. 1 . Children (per 1880 census):

  1. Jennie Prentice, b. c. 1871, NY.
  2. Elizabeth "Libbie" Prentice, b. c. 1875, NY. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]
  3. James Prentice, b. c. 1876, NY. Not in 1900 or 1910 census.
  4. Esebella Prentice, b. c. 1878, NY. (We thought that perhaps "Esabella Prentice" might be "Isabella Prentice," but a Google search show that "Esebella" is a Spanish variation of "Elizabeth" with other alternates including "Isabella.")
  5. Walter Prentice, b. c. 1879, NY. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [3]
  6. Emily A. Prentice, b. 1881, Rochester, NY. She m. John Milne on 5 Oct 1898. He was b. 1876. Not in 1900 or 1910 census.

2. Elizabeth "Libbie" Prentice, b. c. 1875, NY, and d. 30 Nov 1939.

Our information seems to show 2 marriages for Elizabeth; either, or both may be correct:

  • One source says she m. Alan E. Parson, Sgt. 1CL Base Hosp. 99 WWI. He is bur. at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Rochester, Section 4, Range 3, Lot 126.
  • A posting on Ancestry .com says she m. Fred Stellman Hoxie on 16 Mar 1897, Rochester, Monroe Co., NY. He was b. Oct 1874, Rochester.

3. Walter Prentice, b. c. 1879, NY, and d. 17 Mar 1960. Not in 1900, 1910 or 1920 census as head of a household. He may be the same person as the Walter C. Prentice who appears in the 1930 census in Rochester, Monroe Co., NY with his wife and family. There is, however, a problem in that the 1930 census shows Walter's father as b. in NY rather than in Canada but that might just be a census error.

The 1930 Walter Prentice m. Ella McCormick, b. c. 1893. NY. She might be the Ella Prentice shown in the SSDI as b. 23 Dec 1889, obtained her SS# in NY, and d. Feb 1970 in Rochester, Monroe Co., NY. Ella's mother's maiden surname was "Cook." Children of Walter and Ella:

3,1 John Cook Prentice, "Jack", b. c. 1921, NY. His obituary reads as follows:

Idaho Statesman, The (Boise, ID) - Sunday, July 6, 2008 ID United States

John Cook Prentice Minutes before Armed Forces Day, John Cook Prentice, war hero, husband, father and grandfather met the Lord's embrace on May 16, 2008. John spent his final days blanketed by his family's love, and in the care and company of his fellow servicemen and women at the Idaho State Veterans Home in Boise. John Prentice will be laid to rest alongside his bride, Jean Maloney Prentice with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery on Aug. 4, 2008.

John, a retired U.S. Army officer, was decorated for valor and bravery in both World War II and the Korean War. John fought and served in both the European and Pacific theaters during the Second World War. He fought in the North African and Italian campaigns, was at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1942, and battled up the Yalu River in Korea, provoking massive Chinese intervention. Among the dozens of medals and honors, John Prentice was awarded Presidential citations for both World War II and Korea, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, Purple Hearts, the United Nations medal, and five stars for European, African, and Middle Eastern campaigns. In retirement, John served as President of the Military Engineer Society of Buffalo, N.Y. and President of the Retired Officers Association of Niagara Falls, N.Y.

John Cook Prentice was born of American parents on July 1, 1920 in Ontario, Canada. He grew up in Rochester, N.Y. with his six sisters and four brothers.

He met his bride to be, the former Jean Maloney of Niagara Falls, N.Y, in December of 1953. Their love for their country, their fondness for slow dancing, and their passion for baseball kept the home fires burning through most of the Twentieth and into the Twenty-First Century. They loved, laughed and danced their way through Europe and the Americas.

John Prentice is missed terribly but loved eternally by his two daughters, Pamela Storms and Robyn Prentice, both of Boise, his son George Prentice of Boise, and his son-in-law Kevin Storms of Boise.

Of all of his titles and honors, his favorite was 'grandpa.' His story will be re-counted for years to come by his grandchildren, Anne Pieroni of Las Vegas and Laura Pieroni, Kate Storms, Peter Storms, and Andrew Storms, all of Boise. Donations in John Prentice's name may be directed to the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.
