George F. Prentice of Scotland and Somerville, Middlesex Co., MA

George F. Prentice of Scotland and Somerville, Middlesex Co., MA
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Spring 2004 and Revised 24 May 2008

Update of 24 May 2008: George F. Prentice is #1(4)(a) in our Spring 2007 article about James Prentice of Dalserf, Scotland . That article now replaces this article.

George F. Prentice was b. c. 1873, Scotland. He appears in the 1900 and 1920 census for Somerville, Middlesex Co., MA with his wife and son.

He m. Margaret, b. c. 1875, Scotland. They had 1 or more children, including:

  1. George J. Prentice, b. c. 1897, MA. He might be the George J. Prentice shown in the 1930 census in Waverly, Tioga Co., NY as a salesman for a Banking Co., with his wife, Beatrice J., b. c. 1906, MA. He may, or may not, be the George Prentice shown in the SSDI as b. 26 Jan 1896 who obtained his SS# in NY, and d. May 1965 in NY. Children per 1930 census

    1. Lois M. Prentice, b. c. 1928, MA.
    2. Pratice(?) A. Prentice, dau., b. c. 1929, MA.

George does not appear in 1880 US census, nor Ellis Island Records so he may have emigrated sometime between 1880 and 1892, the first year shown for Ellis Island Records.

Who are George F. Prentice's Parents?

George is almost certainly a brother to James Prentice of Scotland and Somerville who was b. May 1864 in Scotland and who appears in our Spring 2004 issue.

We then searched the Scotland census records for a family having both a George (b. c. 1873) and James (b. c. 1864). We did find one. In the 1881 census in Hamilton, Lanarkshire we located the family of James Prentice (b. c. 1843, Dalserf, Lanarkshire) and Agnes (b. c. 1843, Dalserf). Children shown were:

  1. James Prentice, b. c. 1865
  2. Robert Prentice b. c. 1869
  3. George Prentice, b. c. 1873

Depending on the census cutoff date, James' date of 1865 could be 1864 if he had not yet had his birthday in 1881.
