By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Winter 2002 and Revised 16 Mar 2014

Update of 15 Jan 2004: Samuel J. Prentice is a son of William J. Prentice who appears in our Winter 2002 issue.

1. Samuel J. Prentice was born in Ireland c. 1892-3. He emigrated to the US in 1905 and was Naturalized in 1919. He appears in the 1920 Beltontown, Tolland Co., CT census and in the 1930 and 1940 Manchester, Hartford Co., CT census with his wife and family. The 1940 census shows him as a Milk Dealer with 2 years of High School education.

He m. Ida E. (Roberts?), b. c. 1895 in NJ. children:

  1. Eleanor R. Prentice, b. c. 1914, CT. At home in 1920 and 1940.
  2. Jeanette Prentice, b. c. 1916, CT. Not home in 1930 or 1940.
  3. Samuel J. Prentice Jr., b. c. 1922, CT. He may be the same person as the Samuel J. Prentice shown in the SSDI as b. 8 May 1921 and d. 28 Dec 2003 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., PA. 1940 at home.
  4. Gordon Allan Prentice, (adopted), b. c. 1935, CT. 1940 at home. Not in 2014 SSDI.
  5. Blair Arland Prentice, (adopted), b. c. 1938, CT. 1940 at home. Not in 2014 SSDI.

Also shown in the 1920 household was William B. Roberts, b. c. 1859, NY. He called a father in law and is probably Ida's father.

Living next door to the family in the 1930 census was George H. Walker and his wife, Mary C., b. c. 1879, CT. Listed among their children was Blanche C. Prentice, a step-daughter, b. c. 1905. Their close proximity suggests the possibility that Mary C. might be a sister, or sister in law, to Samuel and that Blanche is Mary's daughter by a prior marriage.

Who are Samuel Prentice's Parents?

Ellis Island Records appear to indicate that Samuel Prentice was a member of the family of William James Prentice, b. c. 1857, who emigrated from Belfast, Ireland aboard the "Majestic", departing from Liverpool, England, and arriving in New YHork on 13 Apr 1905. Accompanying William were his wife, Mary Jane, b. c. 1858, and children:

  1. Lillie Prentice, b. c. 1885
  2. Isabella Prentice, b. c. 1887
  3. Winifred Prentice, b. c. 1889
  4. Samuel Prentice, b. c. 1892
  5. John Alfred Prentice, b. c. 1894
  6. Joseph Prentice, b. c. 1901
  7. Jessie Prentice, b. c. 1904

Their stated destination was Talcottville, CT, to join William Prentice's son, William Prentice in Talcottville.
