1. Richard Prentiss was b. c. 1817 in England and emigrated to the United States at an unknown date before 1852. He appears in the 1850 and 1860 Lenox, Madison Co., NY census and in the 1870 Caledonia, Kent Co., MI census with his wife and family.

He m. Elissa (Solissa/Celissa), b. c. 1836 in NY. Given the age spread between Richard and Solissa (19 years), her age and the ages of the known children, below, Solissa may have been a 2nd wife. Children shown in the 1870 census and Ancestry.com :

Who are Richard Prentiss' Parents?

They were likely b. in England. We do not have a birth date, but they were likely b. c. 1780-1797. No other Prentiss b. in England appears in the 1850 Lenox census, so it may be that Richard may have emigrated by himself.

We note that the 1840 census shows living in Lenox, Madison Co., NY, a Lyman Prentice, b. c. 1790-1800 with a female, perhaps his mother, b. c. 1770-1780. However, the 1860 census in Lenox shows that Lyman was b. c. 1793 in VT, and his roots have been traced back to Robert Prentice of Roxbury, MA so it is highly unlikely that he is the father of Richard who was b. c. 1817 in England.
