Ian Prentice, by email of 26 Apr 2002, has provided us with some great information about the Prentices in Abbess Roding, Essex Co., England which lies perhaps 8-10 miles east of Harlow:

A John Prentice of Aythorp Roding and Great Canfield has papers about him which are found in the Essex County Record Office relating to the year 1573. For now, it is unclear what his relationship is to the Prentices described below. For purposes of this article only, but without any documentary evidence, it will be inferred that he is the father of the persons set out below:

  1. John Prentice of Matching, b. c. 1520-40. . . . . . . . [1]
  2. Robert Prentice of Matching, b. c. 1520-40. . . . . . . . [2]

1. John Prentice, of Matching, may have been b. c. 1520-1540. John d. in 1617 leaving a Will. The Will indicates that John had land in White Roding and in Matching. Matching lies perhaps 4-5 miles NNE of Abbess Roding and White Roding lies about half way between them.

John was married and his wife was living in 1617. We do not yet know her name. Their known children are:

  1. Robert Prentice, the Younger. He was alive in 1618 in Matching.
  2. Mary Prentice. She was b. between 1597 and 1617 and was under 21 in 1617.
  3. Susan Prentice. She was b. between 1600 and 1617 and was under 18 in 1617.
  4. John Prentice was between 1598 and 1617 and was under 20 in 1617.

2. Robert Prentice, b. c. 1520-40. He was a Tailor of Matching in 1601. Robert d. in 1618. He m. Margaret Buyers in 1569 in Magdalen Lever which lies about 4-5 miles SW of Abbess Roding. Children:

  1. Nicholas Prentice, b. c. 1570-80 and d. 1645. . . . . . . . . [3]

3. Nicholas Prentice, b. c. 1570-80, a Yeoman, d. 1645 leaving a Will. He married Ann. Children:

  1. Nicholas Prentice, Yeoman of White Roding who owned land in Matching. He d. 1704. Children:
    1. Nicholas Prentice, Husbandman of Rivenhall. . . . . . . [4]
    2. Mary Prentice. She d. before 1704.
  2. Mathew Prentice of Matching in 1654; of White Roding in 1684. He was younger than his brother, Nicholas, above.
  3. Thomas Prentice. He owned land in Hatfield Broad Oak and Matching in 1652. In 1662 he lived in White Roding in a house with 3 hearths (which indicated he was pretty well off). Thomas d. in 1691 in White Roding a Yeoman. He m. Joan Young, a widow of Harlow, who d. 1691. They had three unnamed children.
  4. Jane Prentice. She m. Richard Arnott.
  5. Francis Prentice, b. 1626; a sizar at Queens College, Cambridge, where he was admitted on 17 June 1664. He may have lived in Theydon Garnon in 1662 in a house with 3 hearths.
  6. Elizabeth Prentice, b. after 1618.
  7. Sarah Prentice, as above.
Either Elizabeth or Sarah married Richard Newington of Finchingfield.

4. Nicholas Prentice, Husbandman of Rivenhall. His Will is dated 1686 and he d. 1692. Nicholas was living in Rivenhall 1666, 1680 and 1692. He m. Grace. Children:

  1. Nicholas Prentice, living in Rivenhall in 1709.
  2. Mary Prentice, b. c. 1672-92 and under 20 in 1692.
  3. John Prentice, Yeoman, with land in Netherfield. Children:
    1. John Prentice, Yeoman of Rivenhall, d. 1709. Well to do. Land in Rivenhall, Bradwell and Netherfield.
    2. Mary Prentice, b. c. 1686-1706 and under 21 in 1706.
    3. Martha Prentice, b. c. 1686-1695 and under 21 in 1706. She m. John Cross in 1714 in South Weald.
    4. Abigail Prentice, b. c. 1686-1702. She m. William Smith 1720 in Shalford.
    5. Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1686 and 1706 and under 21 in 1706.

We also found the additional people named Prentiss who are probably connected as siblings to each other, but their possible connection to others, above, is unknown:

  1. Elizabeth Prentiss, perhaps b. c. 1665-1670. She m. Benjamin Redington on 29 Jan 1688, Abbess Roding, Essex. Children (per IGI):
    1. Thomas Redington, b. 1 Oct 1682 Magdalen Laver, Essex, England
    2. Benjamin Redington, b. 1710 High Laver, Essex, England
  2. Martha Prentice who m. Thomas Taverner.
  3. John Prentice of White Roding; appears to have died before 1743; m. Ann Prior on 17 Jan 1706 in London St. Benet and St. Peters Wharf. Children:
    1. John Prentice, Victualler of Bishop Stortford, b. aft. 1706 and alive 1766; m. Mary. They had 1 or more children, including:
      1. William Prentice, b. c. 1720-42 and under 23 in 1742.
    2. Eberneezer/Ebenezer Prentice, b. aft. 1706, A Yeoman. He d. 1766 in Bishops Stortford. No heirs.
    3. James Prentice, b. after 1706. Living in 1766.
    4. Nicholas Prentice, b. after 1706 and d. probably d. before 1766.
    5. Ann Prentice, b. after 1706. She m. James Perry.
    6. Sarah Prentice, b. after 1706. She m. Stephen Hayward.
    7. Mary Prentice, b. after 1706 and probably before 1725. She m. Samuel Warner in 1744, Epping.
    8. Elizabeth Prentice. b/ after 1706. She m. Mr. Phillips.
  4. William Prentice, Yeoman of White Roding. He d. 1743. He m. Jane, no heirs.
  5. Francis Prentice, b. 1691 and d. 1747 leaving a Will. A yeoman with land in White Roding and High Easter. He m. Mary Godfrey at Good Easter in 1705. Children:
    1. Thomas Prentice, b. after 1705.
    2. William Prentice. b. after 1705.
