Marshall E. Prentiss of Madison, Dane, WI

Marshall E. Prentiss of Madison, Dane Co., WI
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Spring 2001 and Revised 16 Jan 2011

1. Marshall E. Prentiss was b. Jul 1855 in NY, and d. at some date between 1907 (when his son, William was born) and 1910 as his wife was then called a widow. The 1900 census says that he is a "Doctor" and that both of his parents were b. in NY. The 1905 WI census identifies his name as "Marshall Prentiss"

He m. Mathild/Mathilda c. 1893. She was b. Aug 1868 in WI, with both parents b. in Germany (per 1900 census) . They appear in the 1900 census of Madison, Dane Co., WI with their children. In the 1910 census she is a widow running a boarding house in Madison.

Children of M. E. and Mathilda per census records:

  1. Luceal/Lucille/Lucile Prentiss, b. Oct 1894, WI. . . . . . . . . . . . [2]

  2. Julian Prentice, b. Jul 1896, WI. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [3]

  3. William Prentiss, b. c. 1907-08, WI (born after the 1900 census. At home in 1910. William appears in the 1920 census in the home of his brother, Julian). Not in 1930 Chicago census, but he may be the William Prentiss shown in the 1930 Evanston, Cook Co., IL census as a lodger in the home of Fred E. and Dorothy Weed.

Also living with M. E. Prentiss and his family at the time of the 1900 census was Bogue Prentiss, b. May 1878, WI, who is listed in the census only as a "Lodger."

The similar surname hints at some unknown relationship. The census record does show that both of Bogue's parents were b. in Scotland. One might speculate that Bogue is the son of a brother of M. E. Prentiss' father which brother had remained in Scotland when M. E. Prentiss' father may have emigrated to the United States and which brother later emigrated and settled in WI where Bogue was born..

2. Luceal/Lucille Prentiss, b. Oct 1894, WI. At home in 1910 in Madison, Dane Co., WI.

She may have m. Glenn Lint. They appear in the 1930 Chicago census where her birth year is given as c. 1897, WI, and he is shown as b. c. 1891, NE. Children per 1930 census:

  1. Glenn Lint, b. c. 1918, IL
  2. Betty Lint, b. c. 1919, IL
  3. Margarette Lint, b. c. 1921, IL
  4. Jennie Lint, b. c. 1923, IL

3. Julian Prentice, b. Jul 1896, WI. At home in 1910 census in Madison, Dane Co., WI. Julian appears in the 1920 Chicago, Cook Co., IL census with his brother, William. They are described there as brothers-in-law of Glen Lint. Not in 1930 Chicago or US census. However he may be the Julian Prentiss shown in the 1930 census in Chicago shown as b. c 1897, IL, with his wife, Margaret, b. c.1895, and children:

  1. Marion Prentiss, b. c. 1925, IL.
  2. Dolores Prentiss, b. c. 1928, IL.

Who are M. E. Prentice's Parents?

He does not appear in the 1860, 1870 or 1880 census. He does appear with his family in the 1900 census, but d. before 1910 where his wife is called a widow. The only clue we have so far is that he is a Doctor and that both of his parents were b. in NY.
