We are helping Alison (Prentis) Contardi and her father, John Prentice, in tracing their Prentis roots. The family we have so far is s4t out below:

1. John Prentice, later spelled Prentis, was b. 1753 and d. 16 Jun 1811 or 1814. We do not know yet his place of birth, but he lived in Great Bardfield, Essex Co., England .

John m. 1st Mary Hitching on 26 Dec 1782. She was b. 23 Jan 1759. They had at least 2 children:

  • John Prentice, b. 1783 and d. 1841. . . . . . . . . [2]
  • William Prentice.

John m. 2nd. Joanna Goodwin on 20 Apr 1794. They had a child:

  • Isobella Prentice, b. 1797.

2. John Prentice, b. May 1783, bap. 25May 1783 and d. 27 Oct 1841 in Great Bardfield. He was a Wheelwright and a parish clerk.

He m. Harriet Elizabeth Josling on 16 Nov 1813, Boxted, Suffolk. She was b. 1789 and d. 1860. She was the dau. of Joseph Josling and Elizabeth Barrell. They had 9 children, 4 of whom died in infancy. They are probably the John Prentice and Harriet Elizabeth shown in the IGI as parents of the following children (per IGI and John Henley, Essex Digest, 30 Jul 2006):

  • George Prentis, chr. 25 Apr 1830, Great Bardfield, Essex, and d. 23 Dec 1866 at the age of 36. He was a Victualler, Sheer Hulk Inn, Woolwich, Kent.

3. Henry Barrell Prentis, chr. 23 Sep 1832 Great Bardfield, Essex, England, and d. 18 Nov 1896, Great Dunmow. His occupation was that of a Sadler. His family appears in the 1881 census living on High Street, Stebbing, Essex.

4. Abel Prentis, chr. 7 Sep 1834, Great Bardfield, Essex, and d. 18 Nov 1896 in Great Dunmow,Essex. At the time of the birth of his son Herbert John, Abel was a Harness Maker and Journeyman and lived in New Street, Great Dunmow. In the 1881 Census, Abel, 46, was head of the household in the High Street, Stebbing.

He m. Sarah Everitt. She was b. c. 1843 in Great Waltham, Essex, England, and d. 14 Jan 1893, Great Dunmow (per Ancestry.com . She was the dau. of Nathaniel Everitt and Elizabeth Hayden (per Ancestry.com, above). Children:

Great Bardfield lies only a short distance from Great Saling, Shalford, and Felsted where Valentine Prentice has his roots in the middle-to-late 1500s.

5. Herbert John Prentis, b. 22 Sep 1871 in Great Dunmow, Essex, d. 17 Feb 1953 in Isleworth, Middlesex, England, and bur. Heston Churchyard,Hounslow,Middlesex,England. In the 1901 census, Herbert, 27, was a Carman living with his brother Henry and family at 21 Adys Road, East Dulwich. When he married in 1910, he was a foreman residing at 21 Adys Road, East Dulwich. He was still working for his brother Henry in his Carman Contractor business. Om 1953, at the time of his death, he was a Retired Master Baker.

He m. Grace Amy Burden on 15 Jun 1910 in St Stephens,Battersea,Middlesex,England. She was b. 16 Feb 1872 in 46 Ovington Street,Chelsea,London,England. The marriage was witnessed by Ellen Prentis, Herbert's sister, and Frederick Richard Burden, Grace's brother, who also were married on that day. Both couples left for Australia on 24 June 1910. Children:

7. Henry Prentis, b. 1 Dec 1868 in Great Dunmow, Essex, d. 18 Sep 1922, and bur. Forest Hill Cemetery,Pirvate Grave 20079, Sq. 46. In the 1901 Henry, 32, was a Carman and Contractor living at 21 Adys Road, East Dulwich with his wife Maria, 42, their children, Ellen W., 8 and Harry T., 4, step daughter, Lily M Everett, 16, and brother Herbert, 27.

Henry m. Maria Everitt. She was b. c. 1859 in Matching, Essex. Children:

  1. Ellen W. Prentis, b. c. 1893 in East Dulwich, London.
  2. Harry Thomas Prentis, b. c. 1897 in East Dulwich, London, and d. 2 Mar 1917 in Mesopotamia. A newspaper obituary reported his death as follows:

      Dulwich Man Dies of Wounds. Pte. H. T. Prentis, Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry died of wounds received in action with Mesopotamia Expeditionary Force on March 2 1917. Aged 20, he was the only son of Mr Henry Prentis, cartage contractor, 21, Adys Road, East Dulwich. Pte. Prentis joined the K.R.R.C. under the Derby scheme in January 16 but was afterwards transferred to the Ox. and Bucks L.I., with which regiment he went to the front. Prior to joining up he was engaged in business with his father.

8. Elsie Florence Prentis, b. 27 Mar 1918 in Crow's Nest,Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia, and d. 1 Mar 1989 in Sunningdale,Berkshire,England. She m. Richard George Hartt on 13 Mar 1950 in Heston Church,Hounslow, Middlesex, England. He was b. 10 Aug 1919 in Southsea, Hampshire, England. Children:

  1. Living son Harftt. He m. Miss Wakeling and had a son.
  2. Living dau. Hartt. She m. Mr Tenniswood and had a dau. who m. Mr. Tenniswood.
