George Prentice of VA and MI

George Prentice of VA and MI
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Spring 2001 and Revised 4 Sep 2009

Update of 4 Sep 2009: It appears that Marlys Prentice Burnett erred in the information she submitted
  • She had correctly identified her father as Robert H. Prentice, b. c. 1906, ND. He is #136(iii)(a)(2) in our Thomas Prentice eBook.
  • She had a minor error in her grandfather's name, it should have beenDaniel Kiser Prentice, b. 17 Jan 1876,Ashtabula, OH.
  • She erred as to the identity of her great-grandfather; Daniel's father was James Henry Prentice, b. 2 Nov 1836, Jefferson Co., OH.
All future updates on this family tree will be in our Thomas Prentice eBook.

We are helping Marlys Prentice Burnett of beautiful Bainbridge Island, WA in tracing the ancestry of her great-grandfather. Here is what we have so far:

1. George Prentice may have been b. c. 1840-1855, but there is uncertainty about his place of birth:

  • The 1920 census entry for his son, Daniel, says both of Daniel's parents were b. in MI.

  • However, the 1930 census entry for his son, Daniel, says his father was b. in VA, son of a slave owner, and mother in OH.

George was in the lumber barging business shipping lumber from Canada over the Great Lakes. George and one son are believed to have died in the storm of 1888 on the Great Lakes when all his barges of lumber went down, with him, and another son. It is said that George loaned $10,000 to young Weyerhauser, of lumbering fame, to go west.

His wife's name is unknown, but the above 1930 reference shows her b. in OH. George's surviving children were:

  1. John Prentice. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]
  2. Daniel R. Prentice, b. c. 1876, MI. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [3]

2. John Prentice apparently went to Webo, MT following discharge from the army after WWI, and it is thought he had contracted syphillus which led to his death. John fought in WW I, had a saloon in Webo, Mont. where he died.

3. Daniel R. Prentice, b. c. 1876, MI. He does not appear in the 1880, 1900 or 1910 census. Spelled "Prentiss" in 1920 census in Ecklund, Burleigh Co., ND where he is a Weighmaster in a Coal Mine.

He appears in the 1930 Wilton, McLean Co., ND census with his wife and family. Dan was a territorial cowboy foreman, then paymaster in coal mine in Wilton, N.D. where he is buried. He attended college in WI for 2 years. He went "west" to the Dakotas after his father's drowning, peniless, and became a cowboy foreman for the Washburn Cattle Company.

He knew Teddy Roosevelt and talked with him several times when TR came out to his sod house for his health. Family lore is that Daniel taught TR to shoe a horse, and TR taught grandpa to make baking soda biscuits.Dan had 7 children. According to Marlys Prentice Burnett, Marlys is the eldest grandchild.

Family lore is that Daniel's mother would arrive from Virginia to Wilton N.D. for annual visits to Dan and his family of 7 children, but John would come riding from Webo -- not wanting his mother to know the source of his apparent wealth, some of which was upstairs in the prostitute rooms.

Daniel m. Abbie S., b. c. 1884, IA with her father b. in England and mother in IA. Children:

  1. Grace C Prentice, b. c. 1905, N. Dakota. At home in 1920 in Ecklund, ND. At home in 1930, Wilton, ND.
  2. Robert H. Prentice, b. c. 1906, ND. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [4]

  7. Gale G Prentice, b. c. 1924, N. Dakota. At home in 1930, Wilton, ND. He lived in Omaha, NE.

4. Robert H. Prentice, b. c. 1906, ND. He appears in the 1930 census in Osakis, Douglas Co., MN, with his wife and daughter. It is unclear whether he is the Robert H. Prentice shown in the SSDI as b. 9 Feb 1906, obtained his SS# in OR, and d. 30 Oct 1995 in Pasadena, Los Angeles Co., CA.

He m. Dorothy E., b. c. 1909, ND, as were her parents. Daughter:

  1. Marlys Ruth Prentice, b. c. 1929, MN.

Who are George Prentice's Parents?

George does not appear in the 1870 or 1880 census, nor does he appear in the 1881 Canada census.

It is somewhat doubtful, because of the different spelling of his surname, whether he is the George W. Prentiss shown in the 1870 census in Chester, Chesterfield Co., VA, as b. c. 1854, VA, with no parents or siblings.
