With the generous help of Andrew Prentice, supplemented by the IGI for Scotland, we found a number of Prentice families set out below:

A. Andrew Prentice, b. c. 1760-1780, Tanner (per Andrew Prentice, email, 22 May 2003 referencing the official death record of Andrew's son, John, which identified Andrew Prentice as John's father).

  1. John Prentice, b. c. 1800. . . . . . . . [1]

1. John Prentice, b. c. 1811, Whitburn, Linlithgow (per 1851 census) and d. 8 Nov 1868, age 68, Camelon, Parish of Falkirk. Camelon lies only a couple miles west of Falkirk. John is also listed in the IGI, but no parents are identified. John may have been b. at, or near, Airth where he m. his wife. In 1867 John was a Canal Boatman.

John m. Jean Duncan on 4 Jun 1830, Airth, Stirling, Scotland. She is the daughter of Andrew Duncan, b. in Airth, and Margaret Eadie/Addie/Adie and was b. 1806, Bathgate, West Lothian (per wedding rec. of son, probably about 1858-9. However, the 1851 census says she was b. c. 1809, Airth, Stirlingshire. Andrew and Margaret also had a son, John Duncan, about whom is information in Fn. 1 Their known children are (per IGI and Andrew Prentice, email, 22 May 2003)):

2. Margaret Prentice ,chr. 22 Apr 1831 Airth, Stirling, Scotland. By email of 7 and 9 Dec 2002, Barbara Anderson has provided the following additional information: Margaret appears in the 1851 census at Mains Carronshore, aged 19 years, house servant born Airth. She is listed as the Granddaughter of Andrew Duncan & Margaret (Eadie/Addie/Adie) Duncan.

3. Janet Prentice, chr. 20 Apr 1833 Airth, Stirling, Scotland. She is probably the Janet Prentice shown in the IGI who m. George Nivin on 8 Jul 1855 in Falkirk.

4. John Prentice, chr. 4 Oct 1835 in Falkirk is likely the John Prentice shown in the IGI who m. Jane Roberts. Children (per IGI):

  1. John Prentice, b. 19 Aug 1860 Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland. Perhaps deceased by birth of next John Prentice.
  2. John Prentice, b. 7 Jul 1861 Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland. Perhaps deceased by birth of 1865 John Prentice.
  3. Jane Prentice, b. 13 Jul 1863, Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland
  4. John Prentice, b. 30 May 1865 Anderston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. Living at home in 1881.
  5. George Prentice, b. 30 May 1865 Anderston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. Perhaps deceased by birth of next George Prentice.
  6. George Prentice, b. 10 Oct 1867 Anderston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. Not shown at home in 1881 census and perhaps deceased as he would then have been only 14 years of age.
Jane appears in the 1881 census, without her husband, living in Arnothill Gardens, Falkirk. Living with her were her son John (#4iv, above), her daughter Jane (#4iii, above) and her brother, John Roberts.

5. William Duncan Prentice, chr. 13 Jan 1843 Bothkennar, Stirling. He m. Helen Struthers on 25 Jul 1867, Parish Anderston, Glasgow. She was chr. 28 Nov 1841, Linlithgow, West Lothian and was the dau. of John Struthers, a Brewery Maltman, and Elizabeth Brown, deceased by 1867. (for her siblings, see Fn. 2 ). By email of 20 Aug 2003, Steve Struthers indicates Helen might be an aunt to his great-grandfather, John Struthers, b. c. 1885 in Falkirk, a brewery maltsman in Glasgow according to family lore and who emigrated to Canada c. 1910.

At marriage, Wlliam was a Ship Carpenter Journeyman living at 3 Russell Place, Glasgow. In 1868, William lived at 30 Kilumhaugh(?) St., Glasgow.

Helen Struthers might also be the Helen Prentice who appears in the 1881 Falkirk census who was b. in Linlithgow, Linlithgow, Scotland who has a son, Andrew Prentice, b. c. 1875-76 in Falkirk (see #5i, above) in addition to the following children:
  1. John Prentice, b. c. 1868, Glasgow. At home in 1881.
  2. Elizabeth Prentice, b. c. 1871, Glasgow. At home in 1881.
  3. William Prentice, b. c. 1873, Glasgow. At home in 1881.

6. Andrew Prentice was b. 28 Apr 1875; the place is unclear but might be Muchiston Hill(?), Scotland. A Ships Carpenter, Andrew died on 10 June 1931 at the age of only 56 years of "Carcinoma of Sigmoid Colon". A letter written by his wife shows her then address to be 34 Adams St. Grahamston, Falkirk. By email of 21 Oct 20010, a grandson, Andrew Prentice (#13(i) below), relates that the 1875 Andrew Prentice played for the East Stirlingshire football club that were winners of the scottish qualifying cup in season 1898-99.

Andrew m. Mary McIntyre on 26 Apr 1901, Falkirk and d. there 1 Sep 1946 at the age of 67 of "auricular fibrillation, Cerebral Thrombosis".. Mary was b. 31 Dec 1863, Falkirk. She was the dau. of Daniel McIntyre (son of Dugald McIntyre and Margaret Hart) and Mary Mallice (dau. of John Mallce and Rachel Hill). Children of Andrew Prentice (per Andrew Prentice, email, 15 Mar 2002):

7. Mary Mallice Prentice. Born c. 1902-05 in Scotland, perhaps Falkirk. She emigrated to Staten Island, NY and lived at 136 Marble St., Staten Island. Not in 1930 census. It is unclear whether she is the Mary Bowie shown in the SSDI as b. 11 Feb 1904, obtained her SS# in NY, and d. Feb 1970 in New York, New York Co., NY.

She m. William Bowie, but it is not known whether it was before or after her emigration. It is unclear whether he is the William Bowie shown in the SSDI as b. 16 Mar 1896, received his SS# in NY, and d. Apr 1966 in Staten Island, Riochmond Co., NY. Sons:

  1. William Bowie. May be living in NY area.
  2. Andrew Bowie. May be living in NY area.

8. Daniel McIntyre Prentice, b. c. 1907.

He m. Helen Forrester Rae on 27 Apr 1928 at The Manse, Orchard St., Falkirk, Helen was b. c. 1908 and was the dau. of Livingstone Rea and Marion Forrester. In 1951 Daniel was working as a metal polisher.Children (per Andrew Prentice, email, 22 May 2003):

  1. Andrew Prentice, b, 4 Aug 1928 and died at only 3 weeks of age.
  2. Marion Forrester Prentice, b. 4 Jul 1930. She m. William Thomson in 1951 in Airdrie, Scotland

9. Andrew Prentice. Born c. 5 Mar 1909 in Scotland, perhaps Falkirk. Died 16 Mar 1975, Infectious Diseases Hospital, Falkirk at the age of 66.

He m. Mary Moodie on 1 Jul 1932 at The Manse, Bainford(?), Falkirk. She was b. c. 1911, dau. of Steward Moodie and Jessie Bell. Children (per Andrew Prentice, email, 22 May 2003):

  1. Andrew Prentice, b. 18 Dec 1932. In 1975, he lived at 212 Main St., Hamilton.
  2. Jessie Bell Prentice, b. 15 Sep 1936.
  3. Stewart Prentice, b. 4 Nov 1941.

10. Helen Struthers Prentice (twin), b. 1912, perhaps Falkirk.

She m. Francis Strathearn Smith on 29 Apr 1938, Union Hall, Falkirk. He was then age 26 and b. c. 1912, son of James Smith and Anne Strathearn. Francis d. 1964, Falkirk.They had 1 or more children, including (per Andrew Prentice, email, 23 May 2003):

  1. Mary McIntyre Smith, b. 17 Apr 1939.

11. Rachel McIntyre Prentice (twin), b. 1912, Scotland, perhaps Falkirk, and d. 7 Jul 1972 at Royal Infirmary, Falkirk at the age of 59. At the time of her death she lived at 348 Thornhill Rd., Falkirk. At the time of marriage, Rachel lived at 7 York St., Falkirk.

She m. Edward Rooney 25 Dec 1936, Lesser Union Hall, Falkirk. At the time of marriage, Rachel was a Laundry Worker and lived at 7 York St., Falkirk. Edward was then 27 and b. c. 1910, son of Arthur Rooney, an Iron Fitter, and then deceased. His mother was Helen Innes and afterwards Moodie. Children (per Andrew Prentice, email, 23 May 2003):

  1. Edward Rooney, b. 2 Oct 1937, Falkirk.
  2. Mary McIntyre Rooney, b. 8 Sep 1942, Falkirk.

12. John Prentice. Born c. 1920, perhaps Falkirk and d. 29 Feb 1992 at 30 Adam St., Falkirk; he was then a retired Gas Meter Reader.

He m. Elizabeth Robson Stewart on 23 Jul 1948, The Manse, Russel St., Falkirk. At the time of marriage, John lived at 34 Adam St., Falkirk. Elizabeth was the dau. of George Stewart, a Steam Fitter, and Hall (unclear) Williamina Wilson. Children (per Andrew Prentice, email, 23 May 2003):

  1. Ian Stewart Prentice, b. 21 Apr 1949, Falkirk.
  2. Alexander Prentice, b. 5 Oct 1953, Falkirk. In 1992, Alexander lived at 71 Anna Ct., Falkirk (per his father's death record).
  3. William Prentice, b. 9 Dec 1950, Falkirk.

13. William Prentice, b. 17 Sep 1901 in Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland. He attended northern public school in Falkirk. In 1923 he emigrated to London, Ontario Canada. William served in the RAF in WW I and served with the home guard during the WW II and guarded POWs in different camps around Ontario.

He m. Violet Mary Wilson in 20 Nov 1925. She was b. 21 Sep 1901 in Kirkonnel, Dumfries, Scotland, dau. of Abram and Janet Wilson. She emigrated to to canada in 1923 with her brother, James Wilson. Children of William and Violet:

  1. Andrew Prentice per his email of 22 Oct 2010.
  2. Viola Prentice. Died c. 1998.

  1. Elizabeth Prentice, chr. 13 Feb 1848 Denny, Stirling, Scotland. She may be the Elizabeth Prentice who m. Alexander Godfrey on 28 Jul 1871, in Falkirk.
  2. Daniel Prentice, b. 14 Jan 1855 Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland. Although there is a discrepancy in birth dates, Daniel might be the same person as the Daniel Prentice shown in the 1881 census as b. c. 1858 in Falkirk and living at 29 W. Bridge St. with his wife, Helen, b. c. 1860 in Falkirk, and son:
    1. John Prentice, 8 months, b. c. 1880, Falkirk.
  3. John Prentice, b. 6 Jan 1859 Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland
John Prentice and Mary are probably the same persons shown in the 1881 Falkirk census living in Pleasance Square. John is shown as b. c, 1821 in Ireland and Mary is shown as b. 1823 in Ireland. Their son, John Prentice, is shown b. c. 1858-59 in Falkirk and in 1881 was a Slater.

William Prentice m. Mary Currie and had:

  1. William Prentice, b. 25 Jul 1852, Falkirk. (per Scotland Prentices). He is probably the same person as the William Prentice, b. c. 53, Falkirk, Iron Dresser, who was then living in Falkirk with his wife, Elizabeth, b. c. 1857, Linlithgow, and children:
    1. Mary Prentice, b. c. 1879, Falkirk.
    2. Williemina Prentice, 3 months, b. c. 1880-81, Falkirk.

Andrew Duncan snrs parents were John Duncan & Jean Gillepie making them Margaret Prentices' greatgrandparents. Jean Gillespie also went by the name Elizabeth Gillespie on their childrens birth records on IGI. Other siblings of John Duncan are:
