Arthur S. Prentice of MA, CT and CA
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Spring 2002 and Revised 18 Aug 2008

Update of 22 May 2004: The 1870 Griswold, New London, CT census confirms that Arthur is the son of Nehemiah Prentice (who is a descendant of John-3) as set out at the end of this article.

1. Arthur S. Prentice was b. c. 1868 in either MA (per 1910 CA census) or in CT (per 1920 CA census). He m. Lillian Whiting who was b. either c. 1868 or 1872, in CT. They appear in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 Los Angeles, CA census. Children:

  1. Arthur Spaulding Prentice, b. 10 Jan 1892, CT. . . . . . [2]

2. Arthur Spaulding Prentice, b. 10 Jan 1892, CT and d. 25 Feb 1956, Los Angeles, CA, age 64 (per Cal. Death Records). He appears in the 1920 Los Angeles, CA census with his wife, Irene C., b. c. 1892, CA. Her maiden surname may be Pennebaker because living with them in 1920 is Katherine L. Pennebaker, called Arthur's sister in law. Children (per 1930 census):

  1. Doris L. Prentice, b. c. 1920, CA.
  2. Robert A. Prentice, b. c. 1922, CA. Not in SSDI.
  3. Herbert T. Prentice, b. c. 1924, CA. Not in SSDI.

Who are Arthur S. Prentice's Parents?

We know that his mother's name is Fanny Prentice, b. c. 1838 in CT, because she is living with the family in the 1910 Los Angeles census.

With that clue, and although his birth date varies, Arthur S. Prentice is probably the Arthur S. Prentice shown in the 1860 census of Springfield, Hampden Co., MA and the 1870 census of Griswold, New London Co., CT, census as b. c. 1863, CT, son of Nehemiah Prentice, b. c. 1823, CT, and his wife, Fannie, b. c. 1834, CT. Also shown was Arthur's brother, Frank A.(?) Prentice, b. c. 1856, CT.
