Gilbert Prentis of CT and NY

Gilbert Prentis of CT and NY
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Winter 2007 and Revised 25 Oct 2007

Gilbert Prentis is #13i in our Stephen-Prentice eBook. We are seeking information about his wife, his children, and their descendants. Here is what we have so far:

13i. Gilbert Prentis was b. 21 Nov 1773, in New London, New London Co., CT and d. in Dec 1828 in Constable, Lewis Co., NY. He was the son of Jonathan Prentis and Margaret Daniels.

We presently have no specific information about his wife and children, but we do glean some information from census records:

  1. He appears in the 1800 census in Harpersfield, Delaware Co., NY. No children are shown.
  2. He appears in the 1810 census in Delaware Co., NY. The census shows 1 son under 10, 2 daughters under 10, and 2 females 16-26

Delaware Co., NY: No Prentis/Prentice/Prentiss is shown in the 1820 or 1830 census in Delaware Co., NY.

Lewis Co., NY: A Widow Prentiss< appears in the 1820 census in Lowville, Lewis Co., NY, but that is inconsistent with an 1828 death date for Gilbert in Lewis County. Additionally, her age is such that she would not be Gilbert's wife. No Prentis/Prentice/Prentiss appears in the 1830 Lewis Co. census.
