Thomas Prentice of Scotland and Quinnimont, Fayette Co., West Virginia
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Winter 2009 and Revised 3 Sep 2015

Introduction: This article was prepared with the aid of Christine Hadden, Scotland census records, Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Amanda Walker and U. S. emigration and census records. It is an updating of: ________________________________

B. George Prentice may have been b. c. 1769-1779, perhaps in Ireland where his son, Arthur, may have been born. George d. bef. 24 Aug 1873 (per Arthur's Death Certificate). He was a coal miner.

He m. Margaret O'Rourke who d. before 24 Aug 1873 (per Arthur's Death Certificate). They had 1 or more children, including:

  1. Arthur Prentice was b. c. 1799 at an unknown location. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [A]

A. Arthur Prentice was b. c. 1799 at an unknown location and d. 24 Aug 1873 at the age of 74 years (per Amanda Walker, emails, 24 and 25 Jun 2007, citing a copy of his death certificate in her possession which reads as follows:

"Arthur Prentice formerly a coal miner widower 1st of Mary Fleming 2nd of Mary Sanders or Lave died on 24 August 1873 11 h(our) 0 m(inutes) am (found dead) 87 Stirling Street, Glasgow aged 74 years father George Prentice coal miner (deceased) mother Margaret Prentice maiden surname O'Rourke (deceased) died from senile debility 1 year (sudden) no medical attendant informant of death Arthur Prentice son".

Amanda Walker also provided another document which was a corrected entry to the above record and it looks as though it was made after a post mortem examination. It reads as follows:

"Arthur Prentice aged about 74 years died 24 August 1873 in house of John McKenzie 87 Stirling Street, Cowcaddens, Glasgow cause of death pulmonary apoplexy certified by Dr James Dunlop physician Glasgow who made a post mortem examination of the body".

Because of the wide variation of birth year (1799 vs. 1811) Arthur is only tentatively identified as being the same person as the Arthur Prentice who appear in the 1851 Scotland census in Civil parish Govan, town of Strathbungo, Renfrewshire, as b. c. 1811 in Dungate, Ireland; Occupation: Cottier. No wife is shown so he apparently was a widower in 1851, his wife, Margaret Sanders (see below), having died between 1847 and 1851. Children shown at home in the 1851 census.

  1. Mary Prentice, b. c. 1837, Gorbals, Lanarkshire. At home in 1851. Not in 1861 census by that name and perhaps married.

George next appears in the 1871 census living at 16 Cathcart St., Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, with his wife and family, and was living in Rutherglen in 1872 when his son, Arthur, was born. Woodside apparently is that community that lies about 25 km SE of Glasgow and perhaps 1 km south of Crossford.
