The 1930 Harrison Co., TX identifies William as a Negro. This article is now replaced by our Summer 2004 article about Will Prentis of Harrison Co. TX .
We received an email of 3 Oct 2000 from Katrena seeking help in identifying the ancestry of her great-grandfather, William Prentice of Marshall Harrison Co., TX. We do not have a birth date or place for William, but based on the birth date of his granddaughter, De Lois, in 1940, William was probably born about 1890-1910.
William m. Persis Attaway. Her last name might be Attaway (which has been spelled different ways at various times), or that might be Persis' grandmother's surname. Katrena says Persis was an Indian and b. c. 1889. An Internet posting suggests the possibility that Persis may have been the dau. of Josh and Amenda Attaway and may have been born either in Carthage, TX or in OK and perhaps a member of the "Simon Al Indian Tribe". Their children, who lived in Harrison County, were:
- Delmo Prentice (son). He may be the Delmo Prentice, shown in our Fall 2000 article about Texas Birth Records,
as marrying Marie Stanley and having at least 2 children in that county:
- De Lois Prentice, b. 20 Sep 1940
- Dellilia Joyce Prentice, b. 5 Feb 1943
- Elmo Prentice
- Leonard Prentice
- Precious Prentice
- Myrtle Prentice
- Bernice Prentice
- Mildred Prentice, b. 1922, perhaps in Logansport, LA and her birth cert. is filed in the Panola County, TX, Hall of Records.
