William Prentice of Ireland and Geddes, Onondaga, NY
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 1999 and Revised 24 Dec 2009

1. William Prentice was born about 1827 at an unknown location in Ireland.

He m. Ann, probably also in Ireland. She was born c. 1826 in Ireland. About an unknown date before 1850 they emigrated to the United States where they appear in the 1860 and 1880 Geddes, Onondaga, NY census. In 1880 he was a "Boot and Shoe Maker." The following children appear with them in the 1860 census, all born in NY:

  1. John Prentice, b. Aug 1850, NY. . . . . . . . . . . . . .[2]
  2. William Prentice, b. c. 1850, NY. Although there is no present proof, there is a chance that he might be the William Prentice, b. c. 1850, NY, who appears in the 1880 census in Wells, Hamilton Co., NY with his wife, Sarah E., b. c. 1849, NY, and children:
    1. Eliza Prentice, b. c. 1873, NY.
    2. Ruby M. Prentice, b. c. 1874, NY.
  3. Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1853, NY. . . . . . . . . . . . . [3]
  4. Arthur L. Prentice, b. c. 1856, NY. . . . . . . . . . . . [4]
  5. Samuel Prentice, Oct 1861, NY He is living at home in the 1880 Geddes census and his occupation is given as "Works In Salt." In the 1900 Syracuse, Onondaga Co., NY census he is unmarried and living with his brother, John.

2. John Prentice was b. Aug 1850 in NY. The 1880 Geddes says his occupation is a "Kill Setter In Pottery". He appears in the 1900 Syracuse, Onondaga Co., NY census with his wife and family.

He m. Jennie L., b. Jan 1860 in NY. Children:

  1. George F. Prentice, b. Dec 1883, NY. Not in 1910 or 1920 census.
  2. Eva R. Prentice, b. Dec 1888, NY.

3. Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1853, NY. There is a good chance he may be the Thomas Prentice who appears in the 1880 census in Geddes, Onondaga Co., NY (although it calls his birth place as PA, he named 2 of his children William/Willie and Ann/Annie), with his wife and children:

He m. Louise, b. c. 1857, NY. Children:

  1. Carrie Prentice, b. c. 1874, NY.
  2. William/Willie Prentice, b. c. 1875, NY.
  3. Midge Prentice, b. c. 1878, NY.
  4. Ann/Annie Prentice, b. c. 1879-80, NY.

4. Arthur L. Prentice, b. c. 1856, Ireland. He is probably the Arthur L. Prentice who appears in the 1880 Trenton, NJ census, b. c. 1856, NY (note that it is not Ireland) with both parents born in Ireland.

His wife is shown as Ella C., b. c. 1857, NY. Children:

  1. Arthur L. Prentice, b. c. 1876, NY. . . . . . . . . . . . . .[5]
  2. (probably) Ernest Prentiss, b. c. 1883, NJ. . . . . . . . [6]

5. Arthur L. Prentice, b. c. 1876, NY. In 1880 census in Trenton, Mercer Co., NJ, at home. Not in 1900 census or 1910 census. In 1930 he lived in Trenton, NJ (per obit. of Earnest, below). We tentatively identify him as the same Arthur Prentice who appears in the 1920 and 1930 census in Hamilton, Mercer Co., NJ, with his wife, Elizabeth.

He is tentative identified his wife as Elizabeth Harrison who appears in the 1920 census in Hamilton, Mercer Co., NJ, and who was b. c. 1876, England. Living with them in 1920 was William Harrison, b. c. 1866, England, and called a brother-in-law to Arthur. Living with them in 1930 is Elizabeth's father, Stephen Harrison, b. c. 1839, England, age 91, who is likely the same person as Stephen Harrison, b. c. 1839, Barton Under Needwood, Staffordshire, England, son of William Harrison and Ann Faulkner per Ancestry.com .

Children of Arthur and Elizabeth:

  1. Ella Prentice, b. c. 1899, NJ. She is living with with her husband with her parents, Arthur and Elizabeth, in the 1920 census in Hamilton, Mercer Co., NJ. She m. William Ehret/Ehreet who was b. c. 1892, NJ. Children:
    1. William Ehret/Ehreet, b. c. 1917, NJ. 1920 census at home in Hamilton.
    2. Robert Ehret, b. c. 1919, NJ. 1920 census at home in Hamilton.

Note: We had originally included in this information about Arthur Prentice, b. 2 May 1901, NY as a son of Arthur and Elizabeth. It now appears that he may be a son of Edward and Mary Prentice who are #1v in our Summer 1999 article entitled Horace Prentice of Canada and Oswego, NY . Such material has now been removed from this article and included in that other article about Horace Prentice.

6. Earnest Whitney Prentice, b. c. 1883, NJ and d. 5 Apr 1930, perhaps from his home at 1734 E. 19th St., Cleveland. His obituary said that he is the brother of Arthur Prentice of Trenton, NJ and named Earnest' children, below. Bur. at Highland Park Cem., Warrensville, OH.

He m. Emma, b. c. 1883, VT. Children: (Fn. 2)

  1. Arthur Prentiss, b. c. 1906 in NY. He may be the A. B. Prentice who d. c. 15 Apr 1970 (per 17 Apr 1970 Cleveland Press). His obit. calls him the brother of the late Ernest Prentice who died before 1970. He m. Marie G. Gellnas. On the other hand, his obit. says he is the uncle of Dale Prentice and Wayne Prentice and it is unclear whose sons they are.
  2. Earnest Prentiss Jr., b. c. 1912 in OH. He might be the Ernest Prentice who d. c. 16 Nov 1964 (per Cleveland Plain Dealer) who lived at 9733 Stone Rd., Valley View, and bur. Holy Cross Cemetery. He m. Sarah Zawadski and had a daughter:
    • Nida Prentice
His obituary says that he is the stepfather of:
    • Rita Wendzicki
    • Patricia Auchinbaugh
