William Lloyd Prentice of Ilford, England

William Lloyd Prentice of Ilford, England
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Spring 2000 and Revised: 3 Feb 2015

We are helping John Wells in tracing his Prentice roots. With the aid of an email from Frances Prentice dated 19 Oct 2001, an email from Kerry Prentice dated 17 Feb 2003 and an email from Michael David Prentice dated 21 Mar 2006, we have constructed the following family tree:

A. George Baker, b. c. 1797 and d. 9 Jan 1837, Westminster St. John The Evangelist, Middlesex, England per Ancestry.com .

He m. Mary Ann Maxwell 26 Nov 1820, Westminster St. George Hanover Square, London. She was b. 1806, St. Giles, Middlesex, and d. Oct 1877, London. Children:

  1. George James Maxwell Baker 1821 – 1904
  2. William Lloyd Baker 1823 – 1889. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [1]
  3. Mary Ann Baker 1826 – 1859
  4. Emma Baker 1833 –

1. (probably) William Lloyd Baker, b. 1823, Bermondsey, St. Olave, England, and d. there Oct 1889 per Ancestry.com .

He apparently fathered a son by Sarah Prentice, a domestic servant (see "Note" below). John and Sarah had 1 or more children, including:

  1. William Lloyd Baker Prentice, b. 1 May 1855. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]

Note: The name of William's father is not included in William's birth certificate, but on William's marriage certificate his father is shown as William Lloyd Prentice. However, we received from Michael Prentice the following email of 7 Nov 1009 which reads as follows:

"After checking the baptism records of 1855, the father's name was shown as William Lloyd Baker and the mother's name is Sarah Prentice, occupation servant. It appears they were not married, as the father's name was subsequently crossed out. So "Prentice" may be Sarah's maiden surname. The address is the same, 27 Clarence St, Bethnal Green."

William's birth and baptism records make it more likely than not that William was born out of wedlock to William Baker and Sarah Prentice and that he subsequently chose to adopt his mother's maiden surname and later, on is marriage record, invented his father's name to conceal his birth status.

2. William Lloyd Baker Prentice, was b. 1 May 1855 at 27 Clarence St., Bethnal Green, London to a Sarah Prentice. On 14 May 1869, at the age of 14, he became an apprentice seaman on a ship called "Neville" for 4 years. He lived at 201 Clapham Road, London. On 20 Oct 1875 he becamea Second Mate, and on 17 March 1882 William Lloyd Baker Prentice becomes a Master Mariner. The 1881 census shows William as boarding at 37 E I Dk Rd., Limehouse, London and his occupation was listed as mariner Mate (per John Wells, email, 25 Jan 2002).

On 28 Dec 1883 William m. Annie Boyd Kewley at Stepney. She was b. c. 1863, daughter of Ann Kewley, b. c. 1826 and who was living with them in the 1901 census. Annie's father's name, as shown on their marriage certificate was William Lloyd Prentice. The 1901 census shows William and his family living at 92 Claremont Road, Forest Gate, London, Essex (per Michael Prentice, email, 26 Oct 2002). Kerry Prentice reports the following details of the register at the cemetary regarding Annie Boyd Prentice: Annie Boyd Prentice, Died 9th October 1930, age 68 years, Residence at time of death, Beehive Lane , Ilford , Essex. 1st Class Private grave, Section 221, grave no 91102.

Who are William Lloyd Prentice's Parents?

John Wells says he has studied the information of the Prentice family of Colne of County Essex. The names of Henry Prentice, son of Golden Prentice, (10b) are very similar to those of the brothers and sisters of his grandmother Ida Prentice.

William, #2, may be the William Prentice who appears in the 1861 census living with the family of Richard Prentice and called a nephew. We note that Richard did have a sister, Sarah, whose 1833 birth date was appropriate to William's 1855 birth date. More about them can be found in our Summer 2006 article about Michael Prentice of Ipswich, Suffolk .

William, #1, may, or may not, be the William Prentice who appears with his wife, Sarahat Chase Side Farm, Edmonton, Middlesex, in the 1881 census; that William was a Gardener, b. c. 1826, London, and Sarah was b. c. 1833, London.
