On 20 Jun 1883 William and his family sailed from Plymouth, England for Australia aboard the "Duke of Buckingham" which arrived in Cooktown, Queensland on 11 Aug 1883, as Brisbane was in flood, and then finally arrived in Brisbane on 20 Aug 1883. Also on board was Martha's mother, Eliza and her remaining children. In 1885 they were all living at 3 Mulgrave Street, Spring Hill, Brisbane, and they named the house "Towngate"

There was a substantial number of Prentices living in Northamptonshire, especially from the early 1600s century, with a few going back to the 1300s, like John who was a Burgess of Northampton in 1380. Many of them, including the family above, are likely to have come originally from Lincolnshire.

Re: Thomas Prentice born 1787 son of Thomas Prentice and Dorothy Bland. I believe he is cited in a Poor Law Removal and Settlement Record of 14 Mar 1832 Shoreditch, Middlesex, England as follows: "Thomas Prentice of 11 Ivy Lane says that 12 years ago he took an entire house No. 7 Cross Key Square in the parish of Bishopsgate without Aldersgate without the City of London at £28 and he rented and receipted same 10 years and upwards and paid past [?] Rates and other taxes – no subsequent [?] settlement. Hath a wife named [Ann Maria crossed out] Mary Ann to whom he was married in Kimbolton Church, Hunts 19 July 1812 and by her hath 4 children lawful issue namely Eliza aged 11 yrs – John aged 9 yrs - Mary 6 and Susannah 1 yr and upwards." I believe there are two other children not mentioned in the above: son Thomas baptised Kimbolton 21 Nov 1787 and Ann Maria Prentice (my 3GGM) born 1819 in Holborn. He appears on the 1841 and 1851 (born Oundle) censuses in Shoreditch. He dies in Shoreditch Workhouse 2 May 1856.
