1. Thomas Prentice, dairyman, was b. c. 1815 in Hamilton. He appears in the 1851 E. Kilbride census with his wife, Marion Finnie/Finney, b. c. 1818 in Rutherglen. They were m. 7 Jun 1839 in Carmunnock. Both Thomas and His wife appear later in the 1881 census living in a dwelling called "Castlehill" in E. Kilbride. Presently known children:

1. Marion Prentice, chr. 7 Mar 1841, Renfrew. She is probably the Marion Prentice shown in the IGI as m. John Bell on 13 May 1864 in E. Kilbride. She is living with her parents in the 1881 census but without her husband. Children (per IGI):
   1. Marion Bell, b. 14 Jun 1866 Carmunnock, Lanark, Scotland. At home in 1881.
   2. Archibald Bell, b. 5 Nov 1868 Carmunnock, Lanark, Scotland. At home in 1881.
   3. Thomas Prentice Bell, b. 15 May 1872 Carmunnock, Lanark, Scotland. At home in 1881.
   4. John Bell, b. 21 Oct 1873 Carmunnock, Lanark, Scotland. At home in 1881.
   5. Robert Bell, b. c. 1878, Carmunnock (per 1881 census). At home in 1881.
   6. Gavan Bell, b. c. 1879, Carmunnock (per 1881 census). At home in 1881.
2. Janet Prentice, chr. 25 Sep 1842. East Kilbride. She is probably the Janet Prentice shown in the IGI as m. William Struthers on 28 Dec 1871 at West End Farm in East Kilbride. Janet's place of residence was given as West End Farm, which suggests that her parents may have owned or leased the farm. William Struthers was a son of Robert Struthers and Sarah Wilson and was b. c. 1837, probably at Side Farm in Avondale, Lanarkshire. At the time of his marriage, William was resident at Glenaven Farm, Stonehouse, Lanarkshire. The 1881 census shows them living at Hill of Auchronie Farm, Kinellar, Aberdeenshire (per Robert Struthers, email, 30 Jan 2003).

7. Helen Prentice, b. 20 Nov 1861, E. Kilbride. At home in 1881.
8. John Prentice, b. 28 Apr 1856. E. Kilbride. He may be the same John Prentice who appears in our Winter 2005 article about John Prentice of Girvan, Ayrshire .
9. Robert Prentice, b. 29 Jan 1858, E. Kilbride. At home in 1881.
10. Thomas Prentice, b. 14 Nov 1860, E. Kilbride. At home in 1881.

Who are Thomas' Parents?

Who are Thomas Prentice's parents? We have not yet found a Thomas Prentice b. in Hamilton in a c. 1815 time frame. However, we have found a couple of other possibilities in records of the Glasgow Records Office.

• He might be the Thomas Prentice, b. 3 Dec 1815 in Gorbals, son of Thomas Prentice and Margaret McPherson. The year of birth matches the c. 1815 census record and Thomas did name one daughter, "Margaret."

• Thomas might be the Thomas Prentice, b. 10 Dec 1817 in Blantyre, son of James Prentice and Jane Eunson.
