Solomon M. Prentice , is identified in Binney's 1883 PRENTICE book as the son of Solomon and Elizabeth Prentice. He was b. 11 Jul 1818 in NY. Solomon is #119/167 in our PRENTICE book. Binney's 1883 Ed. said that he was married to Almira Norton and lived in Rockton, Winnebago Co., IL but had no further information about him or his family.
Solomon is a brother to Nathaniel F. Prentice of Brockton.
Using census records compiled by Barbara Stephenson, we have been able to gather additional information suggesting the identity of his wife and children.
He may be the same person as Miles S. Prentice, b. c. 1819 in NY who is shown in the 1850 and 1860 Rockton census. The middle initial may stand for "Solomon" and either the census, or Binney, may have reversed the first and middle names. His wife is identified 1n the 1850 censusas Mary A., b. c. 1822 in NY. Her middle initial may stand for "Almira." That supposition seems corroborated by the 1860 census which calls her "Almira." The census also shows a daughter and son:
- Clara Prentice, b. c. 1848, IL.
- Fred S. Prentice, b. Sep 1854, IL. He appears in the 1900 South Bend,
St. Joseph Co., IL census with his wife, Catherine, b. Sep 1858, IL
and children:
- Eugene M. Prentice, b. Sep 1885, IL.
- Janette Prentice, b. Oct 1888, IN.
Also shown in the 1900 South Bend census is Will F. Prentis, b. Apr 1863 in IL, and his wife, Laura A., but his relationship, if any, to Miles is not yet known.
