Samuel Prentiss was born about 1853 in Maryland to unknown parents. He first appears in the 1880 Baltimore census with his wife, Emma/Lizzie, b. c. 1856, MD. Children (the first two from census records and the rest from LDS-recorded birth records):
- Susan Prentiss, b. c. 1877, MD.
- Charles Prentiss, b. c. 1879, MD
- Susanna Emma Prentiss, b. 2 Oct 1879 and recorded in the English Evangelical Lutheran Church in Baltimore.
