In reviewing the 1861 Census information of Cambusnethan, Scotland which was posted on RootsWeb Web Archives for LANARK-L Mailing List by Kathleen T. Choi on 16 Jul 1999, we find the following Prentice families whose roots have yet to be traced.

FAMILY 1

1. James Prentice may have been b. c. 1885-1895.

He m. Jane Eusdon (per Glasgow Christenings). They had 1 or more children, including:

  1. George Prentice,chr. 19 Oct 1815, New Monkland (per Glasgow Christenings). . . . . . . . . [2]

2. George Prentice, chr. 19 Oct 1815. The 1851 census says he was b. c. 1815, Tollcross, Lanarkshire. The 1861 census says he was b. c 1813, b. Old Monkland c. 1813 and that at the time of the census he was an engine keeper, res. 169 Caledonian Rd., Wishaw?

He m. Catherine, b. c. 1817, Paisley but the 1861 census says b. c. 1815, Paisley, Renfrewshire. Children per 1861 census:

  1. John Prentice, b. c. 1835, , Tollcross (1861 census says Gasgow). At home in 1861 census.
  2. William Prentice, b. c. 1837, Rutherglen, Lanark. At home in 1851 census but not 1861.
  3. Mary Prentice b. c. 1839, Tollcross. At home in 1851 census.
  4. Isabella Prentice, b. c. 1841-2, Tollcross (1861 census says Old Monkland). At home in 1861 census.
  5. James Prentice, b. c. 1843, Motherwell (1861 census says1844, Delziel). At home in 1861 census.
  6. Janet Prentice, b. c. 1845, Motherwell. At home in 1851 but not in 1861.
  7. George Prentice, b. c. 1847-9, Wishaw (1861 census says Cambusnethan). At home in 1861 census.
  8. Robert Prentice, b. c. 1850, Wishaw (1861 census says Cambusnethan). At home in 1861 census.
  9. David Prentice, b. c. 1859, Cambusnethan. At home in 1861 census.

Also living with George's family in 1861 was a grandson, William Young, b. c. 1860, Cambusnethan.

FAMILY 2

1. (unknown) Prentice was likely b. c. 1790-1805. He does not appear in the 1841 census in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire with his wife and family.

He m. Janet, b. c. 1806, Lanarkshire. She appears, apparently as a widow, in the 1841 census in Old Monkland. Children shown in census records:

  1. William Prentice, b. c. 1837, Old Monkland. . . . . . . . . . . [2]

2. William Prentice, b. c. 1837, Old Monkland, and in 1861 lived on Caledonian Rd., Wishaw. He is likely the William Prentice shown in the 1851 census as b. c. 1839, Old Monkland, and as a visitor in the home of James and Elizabeth Lawson of Old Monkland. He later appears in the 1861 census with his wife and family.

He m. Janet, b. vc. 1830, Dalziel. They had 1 or more children, including:

  1. George Prentice, b. c.1860, Cambusnethan.
