Lucy Prentiss, Tioga, PA

Lucy Prentiss of Tioga, Tioga Co., NY
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Fall 1999 and Revised 8 May 2013

1. William Prentis/Prentiss was b. c. 1793, CT per the 1860 census in Thurston, Steuben Co., NY, where he was living with his daughter, Lucy, and her husband.

He m. Elizabeth Wells, b. in NY. They had 1 or more children, including:

  1. Lucy Prentiss was b. 3 Jul 1840. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]
  2. John Colby Prentice, b. c. 1844, NY.
  3. Florence C. Prentice, b. c. 1848, WI.

2. Lucy Prentiss was b. 3 Jul 1840, Sycamore, De Kalb Co., IL, and d. 3 Jan 1914, Rolland Twp., Isabella Co., MI (ref: The Hortons in American and Ancestry.com: Public Member Trees ). She appears in the 1850 census in WI. See her photo on Ancestry.com . They had the following children per The Hortons in America and Ancestry.com: Public Member Tree:

  1. Hector Alton Horton, b. 7 Jul 1859, NY and d. 21 Apr 1875, Sheridan, Micosta Co., MI.
  2. Jessie F. Horton, dau., b. c. 1862, NY. Living with Charles' family in 1900 census. She m. Thomas Martin on 16 Apr 1911. They had no children. The 1910 US census has Jessie living with her mother, Lucy, and a child, Sterling Price, listed as Lucy's grandson. This child was the son of Earl C. Price, Isabel's husband. The only other record of him I've found is his marriage in Idaho in 1946. (Ref: Ann Jones, email from Scott Prentice, 21 Apr 2012.)
  3. Charles John Horton, b. 1865, NY. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [3]
  4. Theodora Horton, b. c. 1867, MI.
  5. William A. Horton, b. c. 1869, MI
  6. Eugene M. Horton, b. c. 1870, MI
  7. Thomas Goldsmith Horton, b. 1872, MI. He m. Elizabeth Eymer, 1900. Living with Charles' family in 1900 census.
  8. Isabel/Isabella Lucy Horton, b. 1874, MI. She m. Earl Cranston Price, 1903. They had two sons, then divorced him, and changed her sons' names to Horton. (Ref: Ann Jones, email from Scott Prentice, 21 Apr 2012.)
  9. Maud M. Horton, b. 1881. She m. Harry S. Ross in 1906.
  10. Ray D. Horton, b. c. 1885, MI.

Christyn Olmstead's email of 8 May 2013 relates that Lucy's obit. gives her last name as "Wells," so she likely had a 2nd marriage to a Mr. Wells.

3. Charles J. Horton, b. 25 Jul 1865, Cameron, Stuben Co., NY, and d. 27 Apr 1961, Mecosta, Mecosta Co., MI.. He appears in the 1900 census in Petoskey, Emmet Co., NY, with his wife and family.

He m. Harriet "Hattie" May Ormsbee in 1888 at Cameron, NY. She was b. 25 May 1870, Martin, MI, and d. 3 Jul 1946, Highland Parki, Wayne Co., MI. She was the dau. of Albert Ormsbee and Carolyn Phelps. Children per Ancestry.com: Public Member Tree :

  1. Edward M. Horton, b. c. 1890, MI. At home in Petoskey in 1900 census.
  2. Carlos G. Horton, b. c. 1893, MI. At home in Petoskey in 1900 census.
  3. Irma L. Horton, b. c. 1896, MI. At home in Petoskey in 1900 census.
  4. Eva Carolyn Horton, b. c. 1897, MI. At home in Petoskey in 1900 census.
  5. Dorothy Horton
  6. Clara/Clarra/Claisa Horton, b. May 1890, MI. At home in Petoskey in 1900 census.

Living with Charles' family in the 1900 census was his siblings, Thomas and Jessie.

The Hortons of America also mentions, as a Horton descendant, Marjorie Prentiss Horton, born 1908, who m. Earl Garlow and had one daughter, Noreen Marie Garlow. They all reside at Homer, Mich. It seems likely that Marjorie is a daughter of either Charles or Thomas, above.

Lucy does not appear in my extracts from the 1850 PA census when she would have been living at home, so it may be that she was lived in NY prior to her 1857 marriage at Tioga, PA.
