Lawton W. Prentice of Cass Co., IA

Lawton W. Prentice, Anita, Cass Co., IA
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Winter 1999 and Revised: 17 Sep 1999

Update: 17 Sep 1999. For Lawton's ancestry and kin, see the article about John and Charles Edgar Prentice in the Winter 1999 Prentice Newsletter.

A Group Sheet, submitted to the LDS Salt Lake City Family History Center, relates to the family of L. Prentice and Lucy Ellen Lees and cover the family of their son, Charles, or Charley. Prentice, born 30 Nov 1889 at Anita, Cass Co., IA. He married Maude Ham. He is probably the same person shown in the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) as b. 30 Nov 1889 and d. Mar 1974, Clarkston, WA. Their children are:

  1. Bernard Prentice, b. 24 Mar 1912 at Fishtrap, Lincoln, WA.
  2. Maynard Prentice, b. 20 Dec 1916 at Fishtrap.
  3. Leonard Prentice, b. 25 Jul 1918 at Fishtrap.
  4. Zelna Prentice, b. 27 Jan 1920 at Fishtrap.
  5. Carol Prentice, b. 17 Dec. 1928 at Rosaha, Whitman, WA.

In our Winter 1997 Article, we had speculated that the "L." might stand for "Leonard," the name of his third son.

However, a review of the US Marriage Index shows that Lucy Ellen Lees married Lawton Prentice in 1881 in Cass County, IA. However, there is also another Marriage Index entry showing that a Lawton W. Prentice m. Lucy Ellen Lees on 20 Nov 1880 in Delaware Co., IA. Given the uniqueness of the name "Lawton Prentice," and with the same bride's name, we are undoubtedly talking about the same couple.

One other new discovery: in the 1900 Iowa census, a "Charlie Prentice," b. Nov 1889, IA is shown living with his uncle, Henry Lee who was also born in Iowa. Henry Lee would quite likely be the brother of Lucy Ellen Lees. Charlie may then be another son of Lawton Prentice.

Also in this same Winter 1999 issue, we show a Charles Prentice who is identified as a son of Joseph Prentice of Pottowattomie Co., IA. That Charles' birth date is unknown, but unless the name of his father, Joseph, is in error, he would not be the son of Lawton and Lucy.
