Lathrop W. Prentice of CT, RI and MA
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Spring 1999 and Revised 23 Sep 2008

Update of 23 Sep 2008: Lathrop W. Prentice is #48.3 in our Thomas eBook. That material now replaces this article.

1. Mrs. Fannie Prentice was born about 1793 in CT. The name of her husband is not yet known, but the 1880 census record for his son, Lathrop, indicates that her husband was b. in CT and the age of Lathrop, his oldest known son, suggests that her husband was perhaps b. c. 1790-95.

By 1850 Fannie and her sons had moved to RI where they appear in the 1850 Providence, RI census. Fannie and her husband had at least three children:

  1. (probably) Henry R. Prentice, b. c. 1821, CT. . . . . . . . [2]
  2. Lathrop W. Prentice, b. c. 1825, CT. . . . . . . . . . [3]
  3. William Prentice, b. c. 1825, CT.
  4. Frederick, b. c. 1829, CT.

2. (probably) Henry R. Prentice, b. c. 1821, CT. Henry appears in the same 1850 as a Beer Manufacturer in Ward 5, Providence Co., RI census as Frederick, #3, below. He also appears in the 1880 Seekonk, Bristol Co., MA living near Frederick. Henry's wife, Dolly C., b. c. 1823, appears in both the 1850 and 1880 census. Children (per 1850 census):

  1. Jane M. Prentice, b. c. 1841.
  2. Mary F.(?) Prentice, b. c. 1844.

3. Lathrop Prentice, b. c. 1823-25, CT, a Jeweler, married Rhoda Manchester. She was b. c. 1835, RI. They appear in the 1960 Providence census. Sometime after the birth of their daugter, Ella in 1864 in RI, and not later than 1867, the family moved to MA where they appear in the 1880 Seekonk, Bristol Co., MA census with their children:

  1. Leonora/Lena F. Prentice, b. c. 1852, RI
  2. Mary E. Prentice, b. c. 1854, RI
  3. Fannie S. Prentice, b. c. 1861, RI
  4. Ella J. Prentice, b. c. 1864, RI
  5. Eva Prentice, b. c. 1867, MA and d. 1941, Seekonk, MA. By email of 29 Dec 2002, Donna L. Beals advises that Eva is interred in the Rumford Cemetery, Rumford, RI in the family Prentice plot with her husband, Clarence Reilly Hill. He was b. 1862, Seekonk, MA and d. 1947, Seekonk. They lived on Hope Street in Seekonk and had no children.
  6. Annie E. Prentice, b. c. 1870, MA
  7. Rhoda I. Prentice, b. c. 1874, MA
  8. William A. Prentice, b. c. 1877, MA
