He is was a laborer on a "Steam Rail Road", single, age 43, and living with his mother, Annie, above. He appears in the 1940 census in Turtle Creek with his wife and family.

In reviewing the 1900 Westmoreland Co., PA census, we found William Prentiss, b. Jan 1833 in Ireland, with his wife, Mary, b. Feb 1846 in Ireland, and their children:

1. Jennie Prentiss, b. Jun 1877, Ireland.
2. Nettie Prentiss, b. Jan 1882, Ireland.
3. Shallar Prentice, (male) b. Oct 1885, PA. Not in SSDI.

In 1900, James was 45 years of age while William was then 67 years of age, a gap of 24 years. William would have been 24 when James was born, and William was still living in Ireland in 1857 when James was born in 1857 in Ireland. From the birth dates and places of William's children, it appears William emigrated between 1877 and 1882; that is consistent with James's eldest son, James Jr., being born in 1886 in PA.

One might infer that William is James' father, but it is possible that they might be brothers. Further investigation is needed.
