Isaac Prentice of Canada and Montpelier, Washington Co., VT
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Winter 2010 and Revised 23 Jul 2015

Update of 1 Sep 2016: With the help of Larry Prentice, Ancestry.com and Vermont Births , together with Deb Arvidson's email of 3 Dec 2010, we have been tracing George Albert Prentice's roots. Here is what we have so far:

A . Samuel Prentiss, England is shown on the death record of his son, Isaac, at Ancestry.com, and Julie Seals' page at Ancestry.com.

He m. Sarah. They had 1 or more children, including:

  1. Isaac C. Prentiss, b. 2 Sep 1831, Canada. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [1]

1. Isaac C. Prentiss, b. 2 Sep 1831, Canada, and d. 11 Oct 1919 of Arteriosclerosis in Worcester, Washington Co., VT, per Isaac C. Prentiss Death Certificate .By 1862, when his daughter, Sarah, was born, Isaac was living in Worcester, VT, again according to George's marriage record.

Isaac m. 1st. Martha A. Blaisdell on 17 Feb 1865, Calais, Washington Co., VT. She was b. 2 Sep 1839, Fairfax, VT, and d. 11 Oct 1919. She was the dau. of John Blaisdell and Mary Kelp. She had a prior marriage to Lucius A. Ainsworth and had 2 children, Lucius and Alson. Not in 1880 census. Children of Isaac and Martha:

  1. Sarah J. Prentiss, b. 23 Jul 1862, Worcester, VT, and d. 19 Apr 1926, Montpelier, Washington Co., VT. 1870 census in Worcester, Washington Co., VT. Not in 1880 census. One of the nicknames for "Sarah" is "Sadie." With that understanding, Sarah is likely the "Sadie M. Prentis" shown in Vermont Death Records as the dau. of Isaac Prentiss and Martha Blaisdell, b. 23 Jul 1865 in Elmore, VT,a resident of Montpelier, Washington Co., VT, who d. at the age of 60 on 19 Apr 1926. She had m. 1st Fred Myron Corliss in 1883 but was divorced at the time of her 1926 death. He was b. 7 Feb 1859, Duxbury, Washington Co., VT, and d. 30 Dec 1946, lais, Washington Co., VT. Children of Sarah and Fred:
    1. Luna Belle Corliss 1884 – 1931
    2. Louis Earl Corliss 1886 – 1957
    3. Arthur Roy Corliss 1890 – 1963
    4. Bertha A Corliss 1894 –
    5. Berton E Corliss 1894 – 1972

    Sarah m. 2nd Francis E. Carpenter on 10 Feb 1920. He was b. c. 1879, ME.

  2. Florence Edna Prentiss, b. 4 Jan 1867, Worcester, Washington Co., VT. She might have d. young as the next daughter has the same middle name, "Edna."

  3. Martha Edna Prentiss, b. 8 May 1868, Worcester, Washington Co., VT, and d. there 19 Feb 1952. She m. 1s Alden Eugene Farnsworth on 3 may 1885, Marshfield, Washington Co., VT. Children:
    1. Eugene Alden Farnsworth 1886 – 1964
    2. Luena (Ena maude) Farnsworth Damon 1890 – 1979
    3. Eva Rosmond Farnsworth 1892 – 1974
    4. Goldie Clare Farnsworth 1898 – 1935

Isaac m. 2nd Emily Proctor who was b. in Plattsburgh, NY(?), according to their marriage record. They had 1 or more children, including:

  1. George Albert Prentice, b. c. 10 Sep 1880, Montpelier, VT. . . . . . . . . . . . .[2]

2. George Albert Prentice. We find conflicting information about his place of birth:

  • One source says George was b. c. 1882 in Montpelier, VT, according to the birth record of his son, George, who was b. 1915. His marriage record also says he was b. in Montpelier, VT.
  • The death record of his daughter, Evelina/Evelyn, says he was b. in St. Albans, VT.
  • George's WW I registrtion card, dated 1918, says his birth date is 10 Sep 1880. He had brown eyes, black hair, and under possible reasons for disqualification it appears to say "one eye". For occupation he was "teaming" at Plant and Griffith in Bolton, VT. A google search brought up the Bolton Town plan which has a historical reference to the "Plant and Griffith Lumber Company in Jonesville". He lists his nearest relative as Henry Bush (father in law) in Bolton.
  • However, the 1920 census says George was b. c. 1881 in NY.

George d. c. 1953. In 1909 George was a laborer living in Colcester, Chittenden Co., VT. 1930 George and his family were living in Waterbury, Washington Co., VT. 1940 census in Leicester, Addison Co., VT, as a widower living with the family of his son, Robert.

Note: The original birth record for his son spelled the surname as "Prentes", but there was inserted a printed correction spelling the surname as "Prentiss."

He married Gertrude "Girtie" C. Bush on 18 Aug 1907 in Burlington, Chittenden Co., VT per his marriage record. She was b. 27 Sep 1889, Malone, Clinton Co., NY, or Ellenburgh, NY, with both parents b. in NY. She was the dau. of Henry Bush of Bolton. The 1910 census gives his age as 39 instead of 29 which throws off the assumed birth date. They are in Colchester at the poor farm where he was a laborer. It's not clear if they are at the poor farm because he was helping run it, or if they were living there out of necessity.

George and Gertrude were living in Richmond, Chittenden Co., VT in 1920. Children:

  1. Evelina M. Prentice (aka Evelyn M. Prentice), b. 34 Mar 1908, Highgate, Franklin Co., VT, and d. 23 Dec 1932 of Typhoid Fever, age 24, a resident of Waterbury, VT. 1930 at home in Waterbury, Washington Co., VT. She m. John Minogue.

Cora Jesse Martell on 19 Mar 1946, Hillsboro. She was b. 14 Sep 1913, Lincoln, Addison Co., VT, and d. c. 1971 in NH. They had 4 or more children (2 of whom deceased before 1937), including:

Who are Samuel Prentice and his Parents?

We found a listing of Prentices (including alternate spellings of the surname) in the 1852 Census covering Quebec (called Canada East) and Ontario (called Canada West) at Automated Genealogy [external website] .

The census planned for 1851 was not carried out until 1852, so it is variously referred to as the 1851 Census and the 1852 Census. For background information please see the Library and Archives Canada Census of 1851 site. The 1851 Census of New Brunswick Index is also available. It is important to note that many parts of the 1851/1852 Census were lost or destroyed and are therefore missing from the indices.

Unfortunately, the 1852 census does not contain either a Samuel or Isaac Prentice/Prentiss in the right age group.

Investigation is continuing.
