Irish Prentices to PA in the Mid-1800s

The 1850 and 1860 census identify a number of Prentices who emigrated from Ireland in the mid-1800s whose roots and/or descendants are yet to be identified. They are set out below:

Agness Prentice was b. c. 1800-1801 in Ireland. The 1860 Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA census shows her with a daughter:

  • Margaret Prentice, b. c. 1841, Scotland.

Alexander Prentice was b. c. 1787 in Ireland. His roots have been traced back additional generations in Ireland. His wife, Mary B. was b. c. 1796 in PA. The 1850 census shows them living in Independence Twp., Beaver Co., PA. They had at least 1 daughter:

  • Sarah J. Prentice, b. c. 1834 in PA.

Ann Prentis was b. c. 1825 in Ireland. The 1850 census shows her living in Spring Garden Ward 3, Philadelphia Co., PA.

James Prentice was b. c. 1822 in Ireland. His wife, Fanny, was b. c. 1826 in Ireland. The 1850 census shows them living in Ceder Ward, Philadelphia Co., PA. They are shown with 2 daughters.

  • Elizabeth Prentice, b. c. 1847-8 in PA.
  • Ellen M. Prentice b. c. 1848-9 in NY.

Margaret Prentice was b. c. 1831 in Ireland. The 1850 census shows her living in Norristown, Montgomery Co., PA.

Update: Mary Prentiss b. c. 1814 in Ireland, is the wife of Benjamin F. Prentice, a descendant of Valentine Prentice by his grandson, Stephen-3. The 1850 census shows her living in Petersburgh Borough, Perry Co., PA. Also shown are two sons:

  • Benjamin Prentiss, b. c. 1835, PA. He is probably the Benjamin Prentice shown in the 1870 Union Twp., Marshall Co., WV census as a Sailor, b. c. 1834 in PA with his wife, Margaret J., b. c. 1840 in OH, and children:
    1. Mary M. K. Prentice, b. c. 1864, OH
    2. Frank R. Prentice, b. c. 1866, WV
    3. Jennie B. Prentice, h. c. 1868, WV.
  • James Prentiss, b. c. 1837, PA.

Thomas Prentiss was b. c. 1824-25 in Ireland. He was a Wine and Liquor Dealer. His wife, Jane, was also b. c. 1824-25 in Ireland. The 1860 census shows them in 1 W. 8 D., Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA. Also shown are two children:

  • Mary Prentice, b. c. 1856-57, PA.
  • James Prentice, b. c.1859, PA.

William Prentice, a Shoemaker, was b. c. 1824 in Ireland. His wife, Ellen was also b. c. 1824 in Ireland. The 1850 census shows them living in Pittsburgh Ward 6, Alleghany Co., PA. They had at least 2 children in 1850:

  • John Prentice, b. c. 1847-1848, PA.
  • William Prentice, b. c. 1849, PA.
