Update of 7 Feb 2001: We have additional information about this Prentice line and this article has now been superceded by our article of Spring 2001 about Daniel Prentice of NY and Canada.

We are working with Rosie Barbour, Catharine Craven and Robert Prentice of Newcastle, Ontario, Canada, in constructing their Prentice family tree.

1. William Prentice was b. c. 1807. He m. Sarah Ann, b. c. 1819. Robert Prentice indicates that William's roots extend back to the American Revolution, when the Prentice family came to Canada as Empire Loyalists. The 1891 census shows them living in Midland, Ontario, Canada. Tbey had 1 or more children, including:

  • John Prentice, b. c. 1840-50. . . . . . . [2]

2. John Prentice was b. c. 1840-50. He m. Harriet Lebrash in Seymour Township, Northumberland County, which is near Trenton, Ontario. She was b. 1850, daughter of Charles ad Marion Lebrash who was French Canadian and born in 1817. Marion was born c. 1820 in the United States, one of 5 children. Charles' father is thought to be Francis Lagrash who had 5 children. Marion died of consumption in 1871. <

The 1881 census shows John and Harriet and four children living in Cramabe Twp. in East Northumberland County. The 1891 census shows them in Midland District 1 with 7 children. John Prentice's occupation is shown as a stonemason. His parents were also living in Midland in 1891.

Family tradition is that Harriet was widowed very young and walked miles to get to Midland. Harriet died in Midland, Ontario in 1931.

p>John and Harriet had 8 children, incljuding:

  • Sarah Elizabeth, b. 1875 and d. 1934.
  • Louise Prentice. She m. Mr. Aldred and lived in Port Perry, Ontario.
  • Kate Prentice. She m. Mr. Buchanan and lived in Toronto.
  • Sarah Prentice. She m. Thomas Stephens. They lived in Midland, Ontario. They had at least one daughter, (name unknown) who died in 1937. She is Rosie's mother. Sons, all of whom became Captains on Great Lakes ships, and a daughter:
    • George Stephens.
    • John Stephens.
    • Thomas Stephens.
    • Madeline Ruth Stevens. She d. in Midland in 1937. She m. 1st Mr. Schumacher and had:
      • John Schumacher
      • Robert Schumacher
      She m. 2nd Oliver H. Smith and had:
      • Rosemary Smith. She m. Mr. Barbour.
  • William Osborne Prentice, Robert's grandfather.
  • James Prentice who m. Rose. They had at least one son, James Jr., who was last believed to be a lawyer in Michigan.
  • Anne Prentice. She m. Mr. Anderson in Sask.

Rosie says there are many Prentices in the cemeteries around Simcoe Co. and the names are the traditional ones: James, Wiliam, Thomas, John, etc.
