George Prentice of Newfane, Niagara, NY

George Prentice of Newfane, Niagara, NY
Is he the one in Charlton, NY? Amsterdam, NY? Noble Co., IN?
Summer 1999 and Revised: 8 Jul 2009

Four of us (Al Good, Cheri Salz, Kathryn Ojerio and Joe Dewald) have been working to resolve the identities of the one or more men named George Prentice who appears in 4 different places at different points in time:
  • The 1820 census in Charlton, Saratoga, NY.
  • The 1830 census in Amsterdam, Montgomery, NY
  • The land records of Noble County, Indiana in the 1840s.
  • The 1850 census of Newfane, Niagara, NY.

1820 Census: Charlton, Saratoga, NY:

The earliest George Prentice we have is the George Prentice shown in the 1820 Charlton, Saratoga Co., NY census. It seems highly that he, together with the Charles Prentice also shown in the 1820 Charlton census, is the George Prentice, b. c. 1793, and son of Nathaniel Prentice and Lucy Campbell. We do not have a copy of that census record and presently do not know whether he is shown as married or having children.

1830 Census: Amsterdam, Montgomery, NY:

The next George Prentice name we have (who may or may not be the same person) is the George Prentice who appears in the 1830 Amsterdam, Montgomery Co., NY census. Both he and the adult female shown (probably his wife) were born between 1790 and 1800. They are shown with 4 living childen:

  • A son, age 10 to 15 (born 1815-1820). If this 1830 Amsterdam family is that of George of Newfane (below), then the son would be Marcus, son of George Prentice and his first wife, Mary Huntley, who was born 24 Dec 1820.

  • A son, age 10 to 15 (born 1815-1820). If this 1830 Amsterdam family is that of George of Newfane (below), then he may be Albert Emery, son of Goerge's second wife, Cynthia Smead, by her prior husband, Joel Emery.

  • A daughter, age 5 to 10 (born 1820-1825). If this 1830 Amsterdam family is that of George of Newfane (below), then she would be Almira Prentice, daughter of George Prentice and his first wife, Mary Huntley who was born 4 Oct 1823.

  • Another daughter, age 5-10 (born between 1820-1825). If this 1830 Amsterdam family is that of George of Newfane (below), then she may be Charlotte Emery, daugher of Goerge's second wife, Cynthia Smead, by her prior husband, Joal Emery.

In addition, because no son is shown in the age range if 5-10 years (born 1820-1825), we can tentatively conclude that the 1830 Amsterdam George is not the father of Abraham C. Prentice who was was born 6 Dec 1821.

1850 Census: Newfane, Niagara, NY:

The next George Prentice we have is the George Prentice who appears in the 1850 Newfane, Niagara Co., NY census. Here is what we think we know about him so far:

As indicated in he discussion of the 1830 Armsterdam, Montgomery, NY census, the information about 1850 Newfane Geoge is consistent with him being the same person shown in that 1830 Amsterdam census.

1840s in Noble County, IN:

Finally, we have George Prentice of Noble Co., IN. We know he was b. c. 1793 and is the son of Nathaniel Prentice and Lucy Campbell. A History of Noble County, IN says George's brother, Nathaniel, moved to Noble Counth in 1837 "with his brothers." We also know George's name appears on land Deeds dated in 1844 and 1849. We also know that plat maps show George owning land adjacent to his brother, Nathaniel. George does not appear in the 1850 Noble County census, nor do we know what happened to him after 1849.

By email of 21 May 1999, Albert E. Good reports that the 1890 census shows Abraham's father as born in MA and his mother in VT.

The information is not inconsistent with known facts about the family of Nathaniel Prentice and Lucy Campbell.

Nathaniel and Lucy were married in 1788 in CT and their first child, Charles, was born in 1790 in CT. We know George was born c. 1793, but we don't know where. Lucy then died at an unknown date and unknown place. The next record we have is George's second marriage in 1800 in NY. It is possible that George and Lucy were living in MA in 1793 since a number of families are known to have moved from CT to MA and then later to NY. And, interestingly, George had a first cousin (a son of George's Uncle, Joseph Prentice) who lived in Worthington, MA in the 1790s.

The information about George's father's MA birth would apparently be inconsistent with Noble County George being the same person as Newfane George. It would also be inconsistent with Noble County George being Amsterdam George, but only if Amsterdam George and Newfane George are the same person.

Summary:  It seems clear enought that Abraham C. Prentice is probably the son of George Prentice of Noble County, IN. There is some uncertainty about Abraham's birth date; his Death Certificate says he was born 6 Sep 1822 but another unidentified source says 6 Dec 1821. We do not know where Abraham was between his birth and his 1850 census appearance in Noble Co., IN.

If Cynthia Smead did have a 3rd stepchild, as indicated in Cheri's email, his Abraham's 1821 or 1822 birth would fit nicely betwen that of Marcus in 1820 and Almira in 1823, but only if Abraham's father was not born in MA.

For Noble County George to be Newfane George, he would have had to move from IN to NY between 1849 and 1850. It is certainly possible, but somewhat unlikely since folks from Indiana tended to move west rather than north. Additionally, working against the possibility of them being the same person is the apparent NY birth of Newfane George and MA birth of Noble County George.

Further, based on new information from Cheri Salz, there is a possibility that "Charlton George," "Noble George" and "Newfane George" are all the same person.

In our PRENTICE book, we have shown the contents of the Pension Application of Nathaniel Prentice, #271/33. Cheri Salz now has information that Rose Dimmick, a great-granddaughter of Cynthia Smead, wife of "Newfane George," submitted that same information in support of her application to the DAR, identifying Nathaniel as the father of Newfane George.

However, we do not yet have the actual DAR Application, so we cannot identify the factual basis, if any, upon which she asserts that Newfane George is Nathaniel's son. Being three generations removed from George, she obviously has no personal knowledge of the relationships. More investigation is needed.
