Emma Stabler Prentice, Yorkshire, England

Emma Stabler Prentice of Yorkshire, England
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2000 and Revised: 8 Sep 2008

Update of 8 Sep 2008: Emma Stabler Prentice is #1(iii)(a) in our Summer 2000 article entitled Lewis Prentice of England and Australia . That article now replaces this article.

We are helping Joan Beck of PA in identifying the parents of her 3GGF had been the Lord Mayor of York, England. We do not yet know his name, but he had at least one child, a daughter, Emma Stabler Prentice. Here is Joan's internet posting, to which we have added dates and places from census records:

    From: GoJGB@aol.com
    Subject: YORKSGEN-D Digest V00 #1319
    Date: Sun, 11 Jun 2000 22:00:15 EDT

I'm hoping to find information about Joseph Hargreaves, b. c. 1882, Dewsbury, Yorkshire, England, son of Edwin Hargreaves (b. c. 1853, Almondbury, Yorkshire) and Agnes (b. c. 1858, Dewsbury). The family of Edwin and Agnes is shown in the 1891 census:

    1. Ernest Hargreaves 7
    2. Ethel Hargreaves 4
    3. Gertrude Hargreaves 11
    4. Harrold Hargreaves 3/12
    5. Joseph Hargreaves 9, b. c. 1882, Dewsbury, Yorkshire

According to my Grandmother Sarah Emma Thakeray (Thakerah) he (Joseph Hargreaves?) had served prior to their marriage in "The Queens Own Light Infantry".

I don"t know much more about him in UK. But, he emigrated to the US approximately, at the turn of the century, with Sarah. They raised fourchildren, one of whom was my Mother.

I knew my Grandmother, (Joseph died long before I was born). Sarah Emma used to tell me, as a child, that my Geat, Great,Great Grandfather had been The Lord Mayor of York. (?). She also told me that her Gandmother was the daughter of the Lord Mayor, and that her name was Emma Stabler Prentice, this is about all I know (or was led to believe).

Anyone out there have the ability to verify any of this?

I have no background in genealogical research, but was told by one of my daughters that this group exists. I subscribed, and have been reading The postings, I find them interesting, so far though I haven't seen anything that I can connect with.

    Any response would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance, Joan Beck, Pennsylvania, US

There is a possibility that Emma Stabler Prentice may be the Emma Prentice mentioned in our Summer 2000 article about Lewis Prentice.
