By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Winter 2000 and Revised 5 May 2004

Update of 2 Oct 2000: Davidson Fremont Prentice is the son of Davidson Prentice of the Beaver Co., PA Prentices.

Original Article: We received Ron Prentice's E-mail of 1 Oct 2000 about about Davidson Fremont Prentice, b. Sep 1861 in PA, who appears in the 1900 Allegheny Co., PA census as "David Printice." He apparently is the same person at the David Prentice who appears in the 1920 Edgecomb, Allegheny Co., PA census, age 63 (b. c. 1857).

Davidson, or David, married, Teresa, b. Feb 1865, PA (per 1900 census). Children (per 1900 and 1920 census and information from Ron Prentice):

  • Edith Prentice, b. Jun 1882, PA. She m. Thomas J. Jones, b. 1884 and d. 1933. Children:
    • Geraldine D. Jones, d. c. 1904.
    • Clara Jones, b. 20 Mar 1907 and d. 29 Jun 1988. She m. Grover T. Cleveland who d. Dec 1977.
  • James Prentice, b. Feb 1885, PA. Living at home in 1920 census and d. 1957.
  • Elizabeth Prentice, b. Nov 1888, PA.
  • Charles A. Prentice, b. Sep 1890, PA and d. 1959. He m. Mary Kissel, b. 1892 in Hungary, PA and d. 1965. In 1920 Edgeworth, Allegheny Co., PA census with children:
    • Clara P. Prentice. (per Ron Prentice but not shown in 1920 census)
    • David F. (Fremont?) Prentice, b. c. 1916, PA.
    • William Howard Prentice, b. c. 1917, PA.
    • Charles A. Prentice, b. c. 1919, PA.
  • George Prentice, b. Sep 1891, PA and d. Jan 1965. He m. Mary Vincenty, b. 1892.
  • Mildred Prentice, b. Oct 1896, PA and d. 1985. She m. Harold Reuben Baker, b. 5 Jul 1894 and d. Mar 1973. Children:
    • Harold Reuben Baker.
    • Gerald Prentice Baker.
  • Lamont Prentice, b. c. 1901, PA and d. 1923. Living at home, unmarried, in the 1920 census. He m. Elizabeth Maloch, b. 1902.

Who are Davidson Fremont Prentice's Parents?

With the unusual first name of Davidson, it seems likely that he is a son of Davidson Prentice, b. c. 1832, of Beaver Co., PA, son of James Prentice. He was living at home, unmarried, with his mother and siblings in the 1850 Hopewell, Beaver Co., PA census.

We have no information about him after that date. He does not appear in our excerpt of PA Prentices in the 1880 census. Since two of his brothers, Samuel and Alexander, served during the war, perhaps Davidson married before the Civil War and died in that war
