Alpheus Prentice of MA, MO and IL

Alpheus Prentice of Masschusetts, Missouri and Illinois
Winter 1999 and Revised 23 May 2016

Update of 19 Feb 2000: Alpheus Prentice is a descendant of Valentine Prentice in our John3 Prentice eBook. That now replaces this article.
Alpheus Prentice was b. c. 1826-7 in MA. A farmer, he married, first, Rosanna Taggart (per Willma Brunenn's book, Pioneers of the Praire" p. 642) and he married, second, Lucy Cushman in Greenfield, Franklin Co., MA on 12 Nov 1861.

Alpheus, Lucy and their family moved to Washington, Clark Co. MO sometime between 1865 and 1870 where they appear in the 1870 census with their children, except Alpheus. We know, however, that they had a son, Alpheus, because Alpheus Sr. is shown living with his son, Alpheus Jr., in the 1920 Hancock Co., IL census.

According to the 1940 Fountain Green Almanac, Alpheus died on Sunday, November 17, 1921.

Children of Alpheus by his two wives:

  1. Ensign Prentice, b. c. 1854, MA. (See Footnote 1)
  2. Clifford Prentice, b. c. 1864, MA.
  3. Ella Prentice, b. c. 1865, MA.
  4. Alpheus H. Prentice, b. c. 1874 in MO. He m. Eliza Minerva Siepel, b. c. 1883 (per Mary Jane (Siepel) White, E-mail, 12 Jan 2000) in IL. In the 1920 census, Eliza is called the daughter of Martha Sipel who was living with them. Children: (The first four appear in the 1920 Hancock Co., IL census.)
    • Ella Martha Prentice, b. c. 1905, IL.
    • Elma Bernice Prentice, b. c. 1907, IL.
    • Vernon Alpheus Prentice, b. c. 1915, IL. He has at least one son:

    • Carrie Eliza Prentice. (per Mary Jane White)
