We have been corresponding with Peter Prentice who has traced his roots back to Stephen Prentice of Ipswich, Suffolk, England. By E-mail of 23 Jan 1998, Peter traces his line, and with the valuable help of Ian Prentice and help from Ancestry.com we have been able to add supplemental information. Peter's line is as follows:

A. John Prentice of Nayland, Suffolk, b. c. 1695-1721.

He married, first, Elizabeth Barker in 1722 in Nayland.
He married, second, Elizabeth Alderton, a widow of Nayland, on 13 Oct 1729 in Ipswich. Settlement papers exist in Ipswich Record Office about John's settlement to Ipswich St. Clements in 1731. Children, probably by first wife:

He m. Eliza Felgate who was b. 1756 and d. 1834. Both were of St. Nicholas and their banns posted on 12 Jan 1777 at Ipswich St. Nicholas. Children:

Stephen appears in the 1861 and 1871 Ipswich census as a retired butcher, but his wife is called Harriet, b. c. 1801, Ipswich, Suffolk. No children home.

William Prentice, b. 1784, Middlesex. 1841 census in Stepney, Middlesex. Gentleman of Bedford Square, Stepney. Died 1848. He m. Anna Catherine Jee on 3 Aug 1806, Westminster St. Anne. She was b. c. 1781. Children:
1. William Gee Prentice, b. 1809, Westminster and bap. in Westminser St. Ann Soho. He was a meat salesman in Newgate market and died after 1844. Children:
  1. Samuel Robert Gee Prentice. We have conflicting information about his place of birth: (1) John Cornelius, a descendant, relates that he was b. 1843, Tooting, Surrey, London. The 1871 census says he was b. in Lambeth, Surrey. He m. Emma Frances NEWMAN of Mitcham, Surrey at St Leonards Church, Streatham, London on 22 June 1863. She was b. c. 1843, Brighton, Susses. Samuel appears with his wife and family in the 1871 Lambeth census and in the 1881 census in Deptford St. Paul, London.
    Samuel may be the Samuel Prentice who appears in the 1891 census in Islington, London, b. c. 1842, without his wife or family. His wife Emma, appears in the 1891 census in Croydon, Surrey, with her children, living with her brother, Hickman F. B. Naoman. There is no indication at this time that any of this particular family emigrated.

He may be the Frank Prentice, b. c. 1865, Liverpool, who appears in the 1901 Sutton, Surrey, census in the home of Frank and Annie Miles with Rose Prentice, probably his wife, b. c. 1862 in Redruth, Cornwall.
    2. Eleanor Prentice, b. 1868, Liverpool, Lancashire. At home in Lambeth in 1871 census and London in 1881 census. Had issue.
    3. William R. Prentice, b. c. 1870, Lambeth, Surrey. Living with his mother in Croydon in 1891 census. He may be the William Prentice shown in the 1901 census in Lambeth, London, as b. c. 1873, Lambeth, with his wife, Jessie, b. c. 1878, Lambeth, and daughter:
      1. Jessie E. Prentice, b. c. 1900, Lambeth. At home in 1901.

3b. Stephen Felgate Prentice (son of Stephen Grigson Prentice, #3a), b. 2 Aug 1842 at Pentonville, London, England. son of Stephen Grigson Prentice and Sophia Simmonds. In the late 1800s he emigrated to New Zealand where he later married Hannah Down, daughter of George Down, an English 'remittance' man. Steven later went to Australia and is believed to have perished in the Australian gold fields. His widow remarried. Childen of Steven and Hannah:
