Southwick Prentice

Southwick Prentice of Middlebury Wyoming Co., NY

By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Spring 1998 and Revised 15 Dec 2008

Update of 8 May 1998: Southwick Prentice is the son Thaddeus Prentice and Keziah Southwick, all descendants of Robert Prentice of Roxbury, MA. The appear in our PRENTICE book as 234/9v5.

Are you a kin of Southwick Prentice?

(This is a reprint of an article in our Spring '95 Issue.)

Southwick Prentice first appears in the 1840 and 1850 census as a resident of Middlebury, Wyoming Co., NY. Although not yet fully confirmed, he appears to be the a son of Asahel Prentice. Asahel was born 1760 in Preston, CT and died 17 Apr 1806 at Chester, Hampden Co., MA.

Chester records show Asahel had at least one son, David Prentice, born in 1798 at Chester. Middlebury, NY census records show a David Prentice who seems to be of the right age to be the same person; if so, than logic suggests the liklihood that Southwick Prentice may be his brother.

Southwick's wife appears to be Betsey Ann Smith. She is the daughter of Newton and Deborah Smith. According to census and death records, she was born about 1802 and died on 26 May 1846 at Middlebury. She is buried in the Wyoming Village Cemetery, Wyoming, Co., NY.

They had several children, but not all of their names are known:

  1. An son, name not known, born about 1826.
  2. Elizabeth A., born about 1827.
  3. A son, name unknown, born about 1828.
  4. A dau., name unknown, born about 1830.
  5. A dau., name unknown, born about 1832.
  6. A son, name unknown, born about 1835.
  7. A dau., name unknown, born about 1837.
  8. A dau., name unknown, born about 1839.
  9. Mary Prentice, born c. 1843 and died 21 Sep 1846.
  10. Sarah, born c. 1845 and died 21 Sep 1846.

Southwick Prentice does not appear in the index to the 1850 NY census, and has not yet been found in any other state's census index. He apparently moved from Middlebury sometime between 1846 and 1850, but where? With all those children, it seems likely he would have married again, but no subsequent marriage has yet been found.

David Prentice of Middlebury also apparently moved from Middlebury by 1850, perhaps to Cattaraugus, Cattaraugus Co., NY where he is said to have later died. He married Cynthia Pike on 12 Apr 1820 at Worthington, MA. She may be the Cynthia Prentice who died in Apr 1844 at Middlebury. Only one possible child is presently known, Asahel Prentice, born about 1822, who was living in Middlebury at the time of the 1840 census. David may have married, as his second wife, Ann Sheldon, on 9 Feb 1845 in Cuba, Allegany Co., NY. No children are known to have been born of that marriage.
