The Prentices of Ipswich, England and Pennsylvania
Note: This article has now been replaced with a more comprehensive article in our Fall 2000 Prentice Newsletter which has also been renamed as Prentices of Palgrave, England

Original article: By E-mail of 20 Nov 1998, we received the following information from Ian Prentice,
our English correspondent. He thought the information would be of interest to
readers of our Newsletter, and we thought so, too. His information is as follows:

ANCESTRY OF ROBERT OF IPSWICH

"You asked for the line of Robert's son John who emigrated to Philadelphia. Since it is the same as mine, I'll not stop with the families of John's siblings, but keep going to the present."

____________________

C.	John Prentice, The Elder, b. c. 1260-1300, was a Merchant of Bury St. Edmunds
was recorded there in 1319 when he was tried for plotting to kill Richard de Foxon,
the King's Clerk. Children:
	1. (probably) Robert Prentice, b. c. 1280-1300. [B]

B.	Robert Prentice, b. c. 1280-1300, the earlies proved ancestor, was recorded
in the manorial court rolls of Palgrave in Suffolk, almost on the Norfolk border.
It is probable that he is the younger son of JOHN the Elder, a Merchant of
Bury St. Edmunds who was recorded there in 1319 whn he was tried for plotting
to kill Richard de Foxon, the King's Clerk. Robert held 35 acres in the manor
of Palgrave (owned by the Abbey of Bury St. Edmunds) in 1328 and he died some time
after 1342. Children:
	i. Robert Prentice. [A]

A.	Robert Prentice, b. c. 1330-1360, son of Robert [B], was recorded as a
copyhold tenant of the manor of Palgrave in 1386 and was a Juror in the manorial
court many times. His wife was called Margaret and he had died by 1405.
Children:
	i.	Hugh Prentice [1]
ii.	(perhaps) Marion Prentice, living 1406.

1.	Hugh Prentice, b. c. 1350, presumably the youngest son, was first mentioned
in the manorial court rolls in 1388 and was a Juror until 1439. (Elder sons in
Suffolk tended not to inherit their father's property so -or because - they usually
moved away to make their own way in life). He seems to have died in 1438/9 and
his wife's name was Margaret. He seems to have had a sister called Marion who was
alive in 1406. He had at least four children.
	i.	Adam Prentice of Bury St. Edmunds is almost certainly a son.
He died in 1474 and his wife Margaret died in 1475. They had no
		male heirs.
ii. Hugh Prentice who was recorded in the Palgrave court roll in 1445
but subsequently moved away from the village. He was probably
the grandfather of Hugh who died in banham, Norfolk in 1584.
	iii. John Prentice, b. c. 1400.. [2].
iv. Isabelle Prentice who died before 1483.

2. John Prentice, b. c. 1400, held 30 acres of land in Palgrave in 1439
having been given land by his father in 1435 and 1437. His wife was Margaret
who had died before 1483 though he seems to have had a previous marriage to
Elizabeth who is recorded in 1435. John died in 1483 leaving a will and had
five children. John's children were:
	i. William Prentice who died in 1492 and had a son John who was
recorded in Palgrave in 1494 and 1513. John's descendants
lived in Stoke Ash, Suffolk for three generations.
ii. Sabine Prentice who died before 1483 and whose wife Christina
was living in Palgrave in 1524.
iii. Robert Robert Prentice who died before 1524.

	v. Margaret Prentice who married Geoffrey Carle and had a son
Thomas who was born before 1483.

3.	Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1440-1460, was a Juror in the palgrave court
from 1483 to 1499. He died in 1509 leaving a will and was married to Catherine
who died in 1539. He had four children:
	i.	John Prentice who moved to Wattisfield.
	ii. Robert Prentice. [4]
	iii. Isabelle Prentice.
	iv. Margaret Prentice.

4. Robert Prentice, b. c. 1490-1520, married Margaret Baldwin. Robert
died in 1543 and Margaret died in 1581. Children:
	i. Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1530-42, who worked as a Wheelright in
Palgrave and married Margaret Fulcher in 1563. He died in 1590
leaving six children whose descendants I have traced for a
further two generations in and around Palgrave.
	ii. Henry Prentice, b. c. 1530-42 [5]
iii.	Margaret Prenticewho married William Fulcher.
	iv.	Catherine Prentice.

5. Henry Prentice, b. c. 1530-42, died in Palgrave in 1615 having been
assessed at £5-4s.0d. in 1599. He married Ann Byrd in Thrandeston in 1566.
She died in 1609. They had nine children:
	i.	Margaret Prentice who was born in 1567 in Thrandeston and

		died early.

	v. Henry Prentice who married Agnes Mewse on 21.4.1596 in Lowestoft,
Suffolk but died before 1598 when Agnes married Richard Hall in
Lowestoft. He had at least one son:
		a.	William Prentice who was buried in Lowestoft on 3.4.1601.
vi. Robert Prentice who died before 1611. He married Agnes Harold
in 1605 in Palgrave. She married Sabian Penning in 1611 in
		Palgrave. Robert had a son:
		a. Robert Prentice who was born in Palgrave in 1606
and whose children I have traced for two generations. His
great grandson was baptised on 22.9.1691 in Offton, Suffolk
		but he then disappears.
vii. William Prentice, baptised on 6 Jun 1577. [6]

		was buried on 16.3.1579.

		the same year.

6. William Prentice who was a Linen Weaver, baptised on 6.9.1577 in
Palgrave and died in 1660 but not buried in Palgrave. He married Alice Dennye
of Hopton near Lowestoft who died in 1640. Children:

ohn Bancroft in 1640 in Palgrave.

buried in Palgrave on 7.10.1664. He married Elizabeth who
was buried on 23.9.1712. He had two sons:
		a.	William Prentice. For his descendants, see
Mary Ann Prentice in our Summer 2000 Prentice Newsletter.
		b.	John Prentice who appears to have married Mary Holmes
in Thelnetham in 1645 and may be the ancestor of
generations of Prentice who lived in Diss.
	v. Samuel Prentice, a Linen Weaver who was baptised on 31.3.1625
and was buried on 22.12.1700. He married Ann Hall in 1648 in
Palgrave. She died in 1658. They had two children:
		a.	Ann Prentice
		b.	Samuel Prentice. I have traced Samuel's children
for two generations to a John Prentice who was baptised on
8 Sep 1715 and Samuel Prentice baptised on 25 Dec 1722
both of whom have defied my efforts to trace them.

7.	John Prentice, Yeoman, was baptised on 23 Jan 1615 and was buried in

in 1731. John, his brother and his children were ardent Protestant Dissenters

John and Hannah probably had children, but since their children were not
