Philo S. Prentice of Delhi, Jersey Co., IL
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Winter 1998 and Revised 17 Feb 2004

1. Philo S. Prentice was b. c. 1817-18 in NY. He appears, a farmer, unmarried and living alone (as P. S. Prentice), in the 1850 Delhi, Jersey Co., IL. In 1850 Philo was about 32 or 33 years of age. Delphi is only about 20 miles north of St. Louis. One could speculate that, like thousands of others, Philo headed from NY to St. Louis, a major jumping-off point for folks headed to the California Gold Fields in 1850.

If it was gold that attracted him to St. Louis in 1850, he found a greater attraction causing him to abandon those plans.

The Marriage Index shows that he married Louisa Olmstead on 4 Aug 1850 in Jersey Co., IL. She was b. c. 1819 in TN (per 1860 census). The 1860 Delhi census shows Philo, Louisa and children:

  1. Margaret Prentice, b. c. 1852, IL
  2. Christopher Prentice, b. c. 1854, IL He might be the Christopher C. Prentice who was b. Apr 1858 in IL who appears in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 Los Angeles, CA census with his wife, Rachael Eva, b. Nov 1865, MN. Children:
    1. LeRoy T. Prentice, b. Jan 1895, CA. At home in 1930. Not in SSDI.
    2. Frederick P. Prentice, b. Aug 1896, CA. His wife, Anna M., appears in the 1930 census and they are living with his parents. Not in SSDI.
  3. Thomas Prentice, b. Apr 1856, IL. He m. Adelina, b. Jun 1865, OH. Not in 1920 or 1930 census.
  4. Anna M. Prentice, b. Mar 1858, IL.

Philo was likely deceased by 1900 since Louisa, then 80, was living in Sedalia, Pettis Co., MO with her son, Thomas and his wife, and Louisa's daughter, Anna.

Anna appears, living alone in the 1910 Sedalia census.

Also living in Sedalia in 1910 were two additional families:

  1. Charles Douglas Prentice, b. c. 1865 in NY. He might be another child of Philo, but Charles' NY place of birth is different from the IL location of Philo's other children. Charles' wife was Kate, b. c. 1883 in MO, and they had children:
    1. Lucy Prentice, b. c. 1902, MO
    2. James Prentice, b. c. 1905, MO
    3. Alberta Prentice, b. c. 1907, MO

  2. Harriet F. Prentiss, b. c. 1857, IL and her children:
    1. Pauline F. Prentiss, b. c. 1886, MO
    2. Lottie E. Prentiss, b. c. 1893.
Living in Sedalia, as was Louisa, one could infer that perhaps Harriet is the widow of Louisa's son, Christopher, even though the spelling of the surname is different.

Who are Philo S. Prentice's Parents?

There is a good chance that Philo may be the son of Elijah B. Prentis , discussed in our Fall 1998 article.
