Almus Jefferson Prentiss of Mississippi
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Spring 1998 and Revised 27 Feb 2004

Update of 27 Feb 2004: Almus Jefferson is the son of John M./W. Prentice and Phoebia/Phebe Blaylock. See our eBook on James Prentiss of TN and AL (No Immigrant Ancestors).

Original Article: John Walker Prentiss Jr. is trying to identify his Prentice roots. Here is what we have so far:

1. Almus Jefferson Prentiss, "Jeff," his grandfather, born 12 Aug 1886, Booneville, Prentiss Co., MS (per WWI Draft Registration at Ancestry.com). Walker Prentiss relates that family tradition asys he came from a farm in Prentiss County lying outside Jumpertown, a suburb of Booneville. The 1880 MS census does not show any Prentice or Prentiss family living in Prentiss Co., so they apparently were either missed or moved there after the 1880 census was taken.

Almus married, first, a wife whose name is not presently known. Children:

  1. William (?) Prentiss.

Almus married, second, a widow, Dora Green Yates, b. c. 1882, MS. They appear in the 1920 Prentiss Co., MS census. Almus and Dora had six additional children:

  1. Hughes Prentiss
  2. Hardy Prentiss
  3. Ruby Prentiss, b. c. 1915, MS
  4. Ruth Prentiss, b. c. 1916, MS
  5. John Walker Prentiss, b. c. 1918, MS
  6. Lafoy Prentiss, b. c. 1919, MS
