1889 TOMBSTONE
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Spring 1998 and Revised 7 Oct 2008

This is an actual inscription on an 1889 tombstone:

Here lies our infant son
Now he never hollers
He graced us for 14 days
And cost us $40 Dollars

In another article in this issue mentioned using Haiku in genealogy which has the 5-syllable, 7-syllable, 5-syllable format. If the headstone were reduced to Haiku, it might read as follows:

Here lies our infant,
and now he never hollers.
Gone, $40 Dollars.

If you have any headstone inscriptions you think interesting, let us know and we'll publish them. Send them to us at dewald@prenticenet.com.
