Detroit Jewish News (MI) - Thursday, July 19, 2007:Jewell Prentis Morris: 'A Shining Star'

The only way the family of Jewell Prentis Morris knew she was ill was when she began to slow down last March. Until then, she went out to lunch every day, stayed up late at night, loved to dance and even visited Florida's Walt Disney World late last year - leaving friends who accompanied her exhausted.

Mrs. Morris, 87, the wife of one Jewish businessman- philanthropist and the daughter of another, died of cancer on July 13, 2007, in Palm Beach, Fla., where she maintained a home in addition to a Bloomfield Hills residence. Her husband was the late Lester J. Morris, owner of the longtime Morris Buick dealership in Detroit, who died in 2000; and her father was the late Meyer Prentis, an immigrant from Lithuania who served as treasurer of General Motors for 32 years and died in 1970.

"My mother was always full of energy and enthusiastic about everyone and everything," said her daughter, Patrice Phillips of West Bloomfield. "She took tap dancing lessons in her 70s, played golf at the Franklin Hills Country Club in her early 80s and volunteered for many charities.

"I used to go with her door-to-door collecting money for the Torch Drive. She worked at the Leader Dogs for the Blind. She was chairperson of the first-ever Angel Ball for the National Council of Jewish Women, belonged to Hadassah and ORT and was on the groundbreaking committee for the current Temple Beth El building."

Her funeral was held on July 16 at the Bloomfield Township temple.

"Jewell always wanted to know what the next activity was going to be," said niece Patricia Lefkowitz of New York City. "When she took tap dancing, Lester had to enamel the piano because she surprised all of us by tap dancing on it. She was generous and elegant and had a lot of common sense."

Reva Jacob of Bloomfield Hills, Mrs. Morris' friend since their childhoods in Detroit's Palmer Woods neighborhood, called her a "shining star who was always upbeat with a fantastic personality, who loved to entertain and just have a good time." Mrs. Jacob and her husband were boaters with the Morrises, and they often visited and partied in the Florida Keys.

The Morris and Prentis families have supported many Jewish causes, including the Oak Park Jewish Community Center building, named in memory of the Morrises' late son, Jimmy Prentis Morris, who was killed in an auto accident at the age of 13; the Michigan State University Hillel Foundation building, named for Lester Morris; the former Meyer Prentis assisted living home in Southfield; the Anna and Meyer Prentis Jewish Apartments in Oak Park; the Meyer L. Prentis Comprehensive Cancer Center in

Detroit; and the Meyer and Anna Prentis Building at the Wayne State University School of Business Administration in Detroit.

Mrs. Morris is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Patrice and Dr. Eric Phillips of West Bloomfield; son and daughter-in-law, Robert Morris and JoAnn Ross of Colorado; granddaughters, Jennifer and Rachel Phillips; sister, Beverly Wagner of Florida; sister-in-law, Beatice Smith; brother-in-law, Marvin Frenkel; loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; JoAnn's children, Erika and Keith Norman and their daughters, Phoebe and Ella Norman.

She was the beloved wife of the late Lester J. Morris, the cherished mother of the late Jimmy Prentis Morris, the devoted daughter of the late Meyer and Anna Prentis, the loving sister of the late Helen Vera Lande, the late Barbara Frenkel, the dear sister- in-law of the late Alexander Smith, the late Cyril Wagner, the late Melva Kent, the late Sy Morris and the late Lawrence Lande.

Interment was at Clover Hill Park Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the MSU Hillel Foundation, Lester J.
