Agent" for the "Federal Gov.") and d. 6 Feb 1919, CA, at the age of 52. 1920 in Arlington, Alexandria Co., VA; he was then of medium height and build, with blue eyes and brown hair, See also Ancestry.com . The 1940 census shows his wife, Emma, as a widow with an 8th grade education.

Since we do not yet know what the "J." stands for, he might be the same person as John H. Prentiss, b. c. 1877, NY, who appears in the 1910 census in Chesapeake, Elizabeth City, VA. He was then a Soldier, single, with both parents b. in NY. He matches the Harry in the 1920 census showing both parents b. in NY.

He m. Emma V. (Virginia?) 15 Jul 1911. She was b. c. 1887, MD. Both of her parents were b. in MD. Called E. Virginia Prentiss in the 1930 Portsmouth, Norfolk Co., VA, City Directory.

A 1925 city directors shows J. Harry Prentiss and his wife, Emma V. Prentiss, living at 2 Forrest Av. in San Rafael, CA, where he is a Salesman. 1932 in the Portsmouth, Norfolk Co., VA, City Directory. 1947, 1949, r1951, 1954 in Portsmouth, Norfolk Co., VA, City Directories.

1940 she is shown as a widow having an 8th grade education and is a clark in a "Ferry," the same as her daughter, so they probably worked together. Children:

1. Virginia F Prentiss, b. 31 oCT 1914, IN, and d. 13 Mar 1994, Virginia Beach, VA, at the age of 79 and was bur. in Norfolk, VA. 1920 at home.Living with her mother. Shown in 1940 as married to a Mr. Jackson, but he is not shown. She has 4 years of High School and is a clerk in a "Ferry." She may have been m. to a Mr. Shawn and had 1 son and 2 daughters per Ancestry.com.

2. Joseph Harry Prentiss "Hall" was b. 19 Aug 1917, Washington DC and d. 17 Jun 1996, Norfolk, VA, and bur. there. 1940 shown as single with 4 years of High School, a laborer for a "Steam Rail Road." His obituary reads as follows:

Norfolk - Joseph Harry "Hal" Prentiss, 78 [b. 1917], of Norfolk, died June 17, 1996, in Virginia Beach. He was born in Washington, D.C.

He was the retired production manager at the Norfolk Naval Base, Public Works Center. He was a past member of Baylake United Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of Knights of Pythias Lodge No. 106 and a member of Bide-A-Wee Golf Club.

He is survived by his wife, Mary B. Prentiss; one daughter, Carol P. Everett and her husband, O.L. of Virginia Beach; one son, Joseph H. "Hal" Prentiss Jr. and his wife, Marianne of Hampton; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one stepson, Robert S. Baker and his wife, Cynthia M. of Norfolk.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 20, in Forest Lawn Cemetery by the Rev. Amy Daniels. The family will receive friends at the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements by Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel.

1. Carol P. Prentiss. She m. O. L. Everett. 1996 in Virginia Beach.
2. Joseph Harry Prentiss Prentiss Jr., "Hal", and his wife, Marianne of Hampton.

The 1920 census shows that both of Harry J. Prentiss' parents were b. in NY.
