Note: This article first appeared in our Winter 1998 issue under the title, "Prentices of Ipswich." Ian Prentice, who compiled the information, has advised that the line should more correctly be described as having roots in the Palsgrave area and suggested a renaming of the article.
Additionally, since then, much new information has been obtained from Ian Prentice, census available in Ancestry.com and from other articles have been written about Prentices who trace their roots to this line. We have now consolidating all the earlier information into this new, comprehensive article.
C. John Prentice, The Elder, b. c. 1260-1300, is the earliest, presently known member of this line. John was a merchant of Bury St. Edmunds which lies about 120 miles north of Chelmsford, Essex County, and somewhat farther in a direction northeast of London . He appears in records in Bury St. Edmunds in 1319 when he was tried for plotting to kill Richard de Foxon, the King's Clerk. The result of that trial is not known. Children:
- (probably) Robert Prentice, b. c. 1280-1300. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .[B]
- John Prentice, the Younger, probably b. c. 1280-1300. He was banished in 1327 for beseiging the Abbey at Bury St. Edmunds and carrying away gold and other property. This was a revolt against the monopolies of the Abbey which were making life impossibly difficult for merchants and ordinary people in the area.
The revolt was led by a group of London merchants and John Prentice who looted and ransacked much of Suffolk around the Abbey; it was allied to the Peasants' Revolt.
Included in the damage they caused was the destruction of manorial documents which would have helped to fill out and extend backwards this family line.
B. Robert Prentice, b. c. 1280-1300, the earliest proved ancestor, was recorded in the manorial court rolls of Palgrave in Suffolk, almost on the Norfolk border. Palgrave lies about 20 miles east, and somewhat north, of Bury St. Edmonds.
It is probable that Robert Prentice is the younger son of John Prentice, the Elder, a Merchant of Bury St. Edmunds who was recorded there in 1319 whn he was tried for plotting to kill Richard de Foxon, the King's Clerk. Robert held 35 acres in the manor of Palgrave (owned by the Abbey of Bury St. Edmunds) in 1328 and he died some date after 1342. Children:
- John Prentice. He is almost certainly Robert's elder son and one who was a
freehold tenent in nearby Walsham le Willows in 1351. Either he, or his son,
was in a court case in Bury St. Edmunds in 1384 when he was summond to pay a
levy. Children:
- John Prentice.
- Amicia Prentice. She was living in Langham nearby in 1381 when she and her servant, Agnes, had to pay 2s. in the Poll Tax.
- Robert Prentice. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [A]
A. Robert Prentice, b. c. 1330-1360, son of Robert [B], was recorded as a copyhold tenant of the manor of Palgrave in 1386 and was a Juror in the manorial court many times. Robert's wife was called Margaret and he had died by 1405. Children:
i. Hugh Prentice [1] ii. (perhaps) Marion Prentice, living 1406.1. Hugh Prentice, b. c. 1350, presumably the youngest son, was first mentioned in the manorial court rolls in 1388 and was a Juror until 1439. (Elder sons in Suffolk tended not to inherit their father's property so -or because - they usually moved away to make their own way in life). He seems to have died in 1438/9 and his wife's name was Margaret. He seems to have had a sister called Marion who was alive in 1406. He had at least four children.
i. Adam Prentice of Bury St. Edmunds is almost certainly a son. He died in 1474 and his wife Margaret died in 1475. They had no male heirs. ii. Hugh Prentice who was recorded in the Palgrave court roll in 1445 but subsequently moved away from the village. He was probably the grandfather of Hugh who died in Banham, Norfolk in 1584. iii. John Prentice, b. c. 1400.. [2]. iv. Isabelle Prentice who died before 1483.2. John Prentice, b. c. 1400, held 30 acres of land in Palgrave in 1439 having been given land by his father in 1435 and 1437. His wife was Margaret who had died before 1483 though he seems to have had a previous marriage to Elizabeth who is recorded in 1435. John died in 1483 leaving a Will and had five children. John's children were:
i. William Prentice. [3] ii. Sabine Prentice who died before 1483 and whose wife Christina was living in Palgrave in 1524. iii. Robert Robert Prentice who died before 1524. iv. Thomas Prentice [4] v. Margaret Prentice who married Geoffrey Carle and had a son Thomas who was born before 1483.3. William Prentice, was recorded in the Palgrave Manorial Court Rolls in 1509. He had a son:
- John Prentice. Ian Prentice reports that it is virtually certain, though not yet
possible to prove conclusively, that John was the father of:
- William Prentice, Husbandman of Stoke Ash where he was recorded in
a Subsidy Return of 1524 (he also had land in Braiseworth).
He was buried on 10 March 1552/3. William m. Margaret who was buried
on 25 Jan 1567. Their children were:
- John Prentice, buried in 8 Jun 1575. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [5]
- Robert Prentice. May have moved to Thetford where several generation of Prentices lived.
- John Prentice, the Younger.
- Catherine Prentice. She m. John Hammond of Gislingham,
Suffolk in 1610.
A William Prentice, presumably the son of Robert or John the Younger, above, married Mary White in Wheatacre, near Lowestoft, Suffolk in 1614 and had two daughters:
- Mary Prentice, bap. 25 Sept 1614 and buried the following day.
- Susanne Prentice, bap. in 1615 in Covehithe near Wrentham, Suffolk.
- William Prentice, Husbandman of Stoke Ash where he was recorded in
a Subsidy Return of 1524 (he also had land in Braiseworth).
He was buried on 10 March 1552/3. William m. Margaret who was buried
on 25 Jan 1567. Their children were:
4. Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1440-1460, probably in Palgrave. Thomas appears in Palgrave records as a Juror in the Palgrave court from 1483 to 1499. He died in 1509 leaving a Will and was married to Catherine (surname not known) who died in 1539. Thomas and Catherine had four children:
i. John Prentice who moved to Wattisfield. ii. Robert Prentice. [6] iii. Isabelle Prentice. iv. Margaret Prentice.
5. John Prentice, buried in 8 Jun 1575. He m. Eleanor Hubberd on 19 Oct 1563 in Stoke Ash; after John's death she m. John Clement in 1575 (he died in 1617 in Bramford). Children of John and Eleanor:
- John Prentice, bap. 16 Jun 1566. He died a single man in Hatfield Peverill, Essex in 1610.
- Francis Prentice, bap. 3 April 1569. He became a Yeoman in Blyford near
Walpole, Suffolk and was alive in 1617. He married Elizabeth Wilcock in 1606
in North Ockenden, Essex and had two children:
- Clement Prentice who was alive in 1617,
- Eleanor Prentice who probably married William Greene in Little Horkesley, Essex on 19 Sept 1627.
6. Robert Prentice, b. c. 1490-1520, probably in Palgrave. Robert married Margaret Baldwin. Robert died in 1543 and Margaret died in 1581. Children of Robert and Margaret:
i. Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1537-47, [7] ii. Henry Prentice, b. c. 1530-42 [8] iii. Margaret Prentice who married William Fulcher. iv. Catherine Prentice.
7. Thomas Prentice was a Wheelright. His date of birth is not known, but based on the age of his first child, he was probably born c. 1537-47. Thomas was buried on 1 Aug 1590; he married Margaret Fulcher in 1564 in Palgrave. Their children:
i. Thomas Prentice, bap. 17 Aug 1567; he died between 1644 and 1648; m. Elizabeth Crane 9 Feb 1590 in Wattisfield. Had two daughters: a. Elizabeth Prentice, b. 18 Nov 1591 and was alive in 1648, probably having married a Mr. Rewe. b. Mary Prentice, b. 6 July 1596, she was buried 19 July 1596. ii. Margaret Prentice, b. 8 Jan 1569 m. Robert Dixbie in 1596 in Thorpe Morieux. iii. Margery Prentice, b. 9 Nov 1572 d. 5 Jun 1631. iv. Robert Prentice, Yeoman, b. 17 July 1575, bur 4 Aug 1606. v. Henry Prentice, b. c. 1530-42, probably in Palgrave and died in Palgrave in 1615. Official records shows he was assessed there £5-4s.0d. in 1599.
Henry married Ann Byrd in Thrandeston in 1566. She died in 1609. They had nine children:
i. Margaret Prentice who was born in 1567 in Thrandeston and married Jedion Morphew in 1594 in Palgrave. ii. Elizabeth Prentice who was born in 1568 in Thrandeston and died early. iii. Bridget Prentice born a twin in 1571. She married Richard Elsden in Palgrave, 1610. iv. Catherine Prentice, also born in 1571. v. - Elizabeth Prentice, b. 1755, England and d. there c. 1835, age 80. She m. Samuel Sewell of Norwich on 24 Aug 1779 at Bungay St. Mary church by licence, which states that they were both of the parish of St. Mary. The witnesses were Sarah Sewell, Bartholamew (Samuel's brother), James Chapman, Ann Sewell and Thomas Prentice. Elizabeth died before 1835 when Samuel wrote his will but there is no record of her burial in Thurlton. (Ref: Ian Prentice, email, 16 Jul 2011)
- Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1756, England, and d. there 1759, age 3.
- John Prentice, b. c. 1757, England. (Kathleen Fison gives 1756, which is supported
by the reference to him in his father's Will).
John died between 1760 and 1782: the Bungay Priory Manorial Court Book for 18 Oct 1782 states that John had died 'in the lifetime of his father, Thomas. Ian Prentice says that, curiously, there is a family belief on Manning Prentice's side that he married a woman called Eliza but this may be the result of confusion with a completely separate John Prentice of Bungay who died in 1814 and left a Will naming his wife Eliza, a confusion which Kathleen Fison laboured under in her notes on the family history. He was mentioned as being the eldest son inhomas's Will of 1758 when he was under twenty one. (Ref: Ian Prentice, email, 16 Jul 2011.)

16.1 Samuel Prentice, b. 11 Feb 1758, England. He appears in the 1841 census in Walsham Le Willows, Suffolk, living with the family of his son, Samuel. He may have d. before 1851 as he is not living with his son, Samuel.
Ian Prentice's email of 16 Jul 2011 relates that Samuel and his wife lived near Market Place, where Samuel had messuages, dwelling houses and shops; in or near Castle Yard he also had a Chandling Office, Stable Warehouses, Cartshed and a small yard. His partner was Job Robinson and his will mentions ten American Bank shares worth £800 which were due from his brother-in-law Samuel Bartholamew Sewell. He inherited the acre of land in a Close and a parcel containing one and a half roods [1 rood=1/4 acre] in Bungay Priory which were originally bequeathed to his elder brother John at the Manorial Court session of 18th. October, 1782 and the built-on piece of land in Castle Orchard at the Bungay Stoke Manorial Court session of 18th. October that year.
He imported goods from Holland including cheeses, ham, sweetmeats and dried fruits and was famous for introducing trade tokens in his shops. His will refers to his being a shopkeeper, grocer and tallow chandler. He wanted all his messuages, shops, warehouses, cottages, gardens, cornmonger lands, tenements and hereditaments in Bungay, Homersfield (Suffolk), Ditchingham (Norfolk), and in the city of Norwich to be disposed of, including his cotton and manufactory business in Norwich.
His Executors were George Watson of Saxlingham, Norfolk, Gent. and John Webster of St. John Ilketshall, Suffolk, Farmer. His will was dated 11th. January, 1809 and probate was granted on 8th. July, 1809 with the effects worth under £7,500. He died on 17th. January aged fifty one and was buried in the Protestant Dissenters Burying Ground in Bungay on 21st. January. Unfortunately, the burying ground itself and all records no longer exist.

- Sarah Prentice, b. c. 1785 and d. 24 Dec 1825, age 40. Ian Prentice's email of 16 Jul 2011 relates that Sarah m. John Crisp a Merchant of Beccles at Bungay St. Mary on 1st. October, 1805. She was under the age of twenty and of the parish of St. Mary but had the consent of her parents for the licence. The witnesses were Mary Ann Crisp and C. Prentice, presumably Charles. In 1830 John Crisp lived as a Gentleman at Old Market, Beccles where he was a Corn and Coal Merchant and Maltster. He was co-Executor of his mother-in-law, Sarah's Will and also of Rachael's which suggests that he was well-liked and -regarded by the family. He died on 13th. January, 1864 at Beccles leaving a Will and effects valued at under £14,000 which he bequeathed between his surviving children and grandchildren. Sarah was the sister to whom Rachael appeared to be closest.
- Ann Prentice b. 6 Sep 1786, Bungay, Suffolk, and d. 1869, age 83. She was bap. 7 Jan 1787 at Bungay Independent Church. She died in 1869. Ann m. Joseph Battley, a widower, on 15 Oct 1827 at St. Mary's Church, Bury St. Edmunds. He was almost certainly the son of Charles Battley of Bury St. Edmunds who married on 14th. December, 1798 at St. Edmunds Church and since Ann was described as a resident of Bury, she was probably living with the de Carles at the time. From Sarah's Will it would seem that she did not approve of Joseph and regarded him as a financial liability and there is a hint that they may have lived some way away. Joseph died in 1846 in Hackney. In 1851 Ann and her daughter were living in Rotherfield Greys, Oxfordshire. (Ref: Ian Prentice, email, 16 Jul 2011.)
- Sophia Prentice, b. 2 Feb 1788, Bungay, Suffolk, bap. 24 Feb 1788, and d. 24 Sep 1840 in Bury St. Edmunds, age 52. She m. Benjamin de Carle on 24 Feb 1814 at Bungay St. Mary. Benjamin was registered as a Statuary and Mason at 11, Honeyhill, Bury St. Edmunds in 1830. He was bap. in 1788 at Norwich St. Peter Parmentergate, the son of John and Alice (nee Parkerson) who had been married at the same church on 6 Apr 1773.

16.4 Samuel Prentice, b. 24 Nov 1783, Bungay, Suffolk and d. 1853, Peckham, Surrey. He appears in the 1841 census in Walsham Le Willows with an apparent wife, Sarah, b. c. 1791, Suffolk. Sarah may have d. before 1851 as she is not shown in the 1851 census where he is shown as a retired merchat, living with servants, in Camberwell, Surrey. Neither is Sarah mentioned in Samuel's Will, discussed below.
In Prentice's email of 16 Jul 2011 relates the following information: The only mention of him in his mother's Will is a legacy of £19-19s-0d for mourning, implying that he may have lived some distance away and that he had estranged himself from the family, a supposition reinforced by Rachael's will of 1827 in which she makes no mention of him.
In the Land Tax Assessment of 1799 Samuel was assessed at £1-4s-0d in Bungay Burgh, and a contract date was given as 16th. June, 1800 with J. and Robert Davey as guarantors. He was recorded in 1830 as being a Corn Chandler at Old Haymarket, Norwich, a Saddler and Harness Maker at 7, Magdalen Street, Norwich and as a Grocer and Linen Draper in Market Place, Stowmarket. He left a Prerogative Court of Canterbury will dated 9th. February, 1849, when, styled 'Esquire', he was living at Trinity Square, Surrey having recently moved from Mincing Lane in the City of London near Fenchurch on the north side of London Bridge. He was a Flax Merchant and had obviously done well for himself.
Contrary to impressions from earlier sources he had not estranged himself from all his family. He was obviously very fond of and had given financial support to his nephew Charles Brightley and virtually all of his surviving family received legacies.
To Charles Brightley he left his gold watch and all his silverware bearing the engraved letter P, £1,000 less any money which Charles might owe him at the time of his death, a two third share of the invested sum of £600 after the death of his brother John and a further invested sum of £50 the interest from which he was to have two thirds and John Barkhouse the remaining third; to the widow of his dead brother Charles, who curiously he did not name, he left £50 for mourning (strangely and perhaps consciously echoing the legacy he had from his own mother); to her daughter Emily £200.
He gave £200 to Anna Eliza Battley, daughter of Joseph and Ann Battley; the same amount to each of the 'four' children of Benjamin de Carle: Elizabeth, Sophia, John and Edward; and the same to John Crisp's children: Sarah, Emily Jane by then married to Mr. Paul and Harriett who had married Mr. Walker.
He left £200 with all his furniture to his servant Maria Phillips and to Joseph Barkhouse 'for his faithful conduct to me during the long period he has been in my service' £300 with a third of the invested sum of £600. He also left an interest-bearing investment for Ann his sister for the rest of her life.
He was also clearly concerned to help his brother John, for whom unfortunately he gave no address, and left him his silver watch and all his clothes with an investment of £600 and £200 with the curious rider of it being 'for his own use and benefit'. He left the following legacies to John's children: £200 to Sarah and £100 to Emily which suggests that he was not particularly fond of her. In a Codicil written on 30th. May that year, however, he made an additional bequest of £50 to Emily and also bequests of £200 to Eliza, who had recently married a Mr. Fawcett, and of £100 to Harriett; these afterthoughts seem to suggest that he was not in regular contact with them, perhaps because they lived some way away, or simply that he did not greatly care for them. In context of the odd rider to his bequest to John, it may be that his daughters henpecked him.
16.5 John Prentice, b. 26 Jul 1791, Bungay, Suffolk, bap. 17 Nov 1792, lived in London, and d. Mar 1881, Coventry, Warwickshire, age 90. 1851 he was a Principal Warder in Millbank Prison, Cheriton. 1861 he was a School-master at 10 Stanton St., Coventry, Warwickshire. 1871 census in Holy Trinity, Warwickshire. (Ref: Ian Prentice, email, 16 Jul 2011.)
He m. 1st Joanne O'Callaghan c. 1812. He described himself as a musician in 1814 and 1816 and then as a soldier in 1824. He lived in Newcastle-on-Tyne, Northumberland for at least part of his life, certainly in 1822 when Agnes was baptised and presumably settled there after 1816, moving back to Bungay in 1824 temporarily. By 1830 he was living in Exeter, where Emily was born, but this was presumably a temporary residence with the Army, in which he was a Private in the 3rd. Dragoon Guards. There is no record of Joanna or any of the children being buried between 1826 and 1835 in Exeter.
There are brief details of his military service in the Public Record Office at Kew. These state that he was born in the St. Andrews district of Norwich and that before joining up he was a labourer. He was attested for the 20th Light Dragoons in London on 9th June, 1816 aged twenty two. He served as a Private until 7th August, 1817 when he was promoted to the post of Corporal until 12th December, 1818. He was then transferred on 26 Mar 1819 to the 3rd Dragoon Guards but was demoted back to Private, though he was promoted again on 24 Mar 1820. He was reduced to Private again on 7 Mar 1824 but was again promoted to Corporal on 28 Mar 1835. Again he was reduced to Private on 5 Jul 1836 and remained in this post until 26 Nov 1843.
He was discharged in Jan 1844 age 44 [if b. 26 Jul 1791, he was age 52] as being "unfit for further service on account of a rupture on his left side" in the judgement of the Chelsea Army Board. The discharge papers state that his conduct was that of a good soldier, although on two occasions he was punished and demoted for neglect of duty and drunkenness. The papers describe him as being 49 years [actually 52+] and 5 months old, five feet eight and a quarter inches tall with grizzled hair, grey eyes and fair complexion; his trade was given as being a labourer.
In 1841 he would have been abroad with the army, presumably in Portabello barracks, Dublin from where he was discharged on 26th. November, 1843 aged forty nine and five months [actually 52+] his total service was for 27 years and 58 days.
He married his second wife, Maria Dawson while in Ireland in about 1839 to 1842, possibly in Dundalk, county Louth where their eldest daughter appears to have been born. Maria was born in about 1822 in Coventry, the daughter of a career soldier who was presumably serving in Ireland at the same time as John.
After being pensioned off, at the kingly rate of one shilling and a penny halfpenny a week as from 13th. February, 1844, he is next recorded at the time of the marriage of his daughter Eliza in 1849 as a Warden and living in Marylebone but the marriage certificate unfortunately gives no more details of his address.
1851 as living at 36, Durham Street, Lambeth, London with his wife and children Hannah, Emma and James and working as Principal Warder at Millbank Prison, Shorncliff Barracks Convict Station, Cheriton, Kent and was staying there on the night of the Census. In 1861 he was living at 10, Stanton Street, Coventry, Warwickshire and working as a schoolmaster at the advanced age of 70 and earning about eight shillings a week, less than a groom or gardener. With him were his wife and children Hannah, a ribbon weaver, Emma also a ribbon weaver, James, Anne, Thomas, Caroline, Charles W. and Rachael. He had moved to Coventry in 1857.
In 1871, age 80, he was living at 25, Weston Street, Coventry as a widower and Chelsea pensioner, presumably having retired from being a schoolmaster. His wife had died on 20th. March, 1871. Living with him were his son James, Thomas, Charles W. Rachael and Mary.
He died from decay of nature, aged 90, on 10 Jan 1881 at his home at 8 Court, 30 Gosford Street, Coventry. His death was certified by D. McVeagh and notified the following day by his daughter Rachael who was present at his death.
He must have had a pretty hard life living not far off the poverty line after leaving the army in 1843 despite whatever help his brother Samuel was able to give him while he was alive.
He was left a silver watch, all his clothes, £200 and an annuity by his brother Samuel in 1849 but unfortunately no mention was made of his place of residence.
He styled himself a Gentleman in 1853 when he was a witness at the marriage of his daughter, Sarah in Newington, thus making it impossible to know what his profession was or had been. Joanna was alive in 1830 but presumably died fairly soon afterwards since family tradition states that she died young.
He m. 2nd Maria Dawson c. 1842. She was b. 1824, Coventry, Warwickshire, and d. there Mar 1871.
Children of John and his 1st wife, Joanne O'Callaghan, per above biography:
- Samuel Prentice, bap. 16 Oct 1814, Norwich St. Clements. Apparently died young.
- Mary Prentice, bap. 20 Jun 1816, Norwich St. Clements. Apparently died young.
- Sarah Prentice, b. 1821, Newcastle St. John, Northumberland. She m. William Bellingham,
Gentleman of 22, Blackman Street, Newington, Surrey at Trinity Church in the Parish of St. Mary,
in Newington on 21st. May, 1853. He was the son of William, a Licensed Victualler and born
in 1828 in Hackney St. John. The witnesses at the marriage were Sarah's father, John and her
sister Eliza who gave her surname as Prentice despite the fact that she had married Edwin
Fossett in 1849. Her address was also 22, Blackman Street. She was left £200 by her uncle
Samuel in1849 and the implication is that he was more fond of her than of her sisters.
Sarah and William had two children:
- William Augustus Harvey Bellingham, b. c. 1855
in New Brunswick, Canada. He is recorded in the 1871 Census when he was living at
home. Thereafter he lived abroad working as an engineer with the British Municipal
Council in Tientsin in China in 1908. He died on 17th. November, 1909 in Tientsin,
Tianjin Shigu, Tanjin, China. His obituary, which appears in Ancestry.com reads:
Augustus William Harvey Bellingham. 365 His bright, genial character and unfailing
consideration for others endeared him to all who served with or under him, and he was
undoubtedly the most deservedly popular officer in the Public Works Department; whilst
his great ability as an engineer no less than his sound judgment and tact gained for him \ the entire confidence of the Indian (sic) Government.
He m. Harriet Octavia Augusta Morse in Jun 1879 in St. George Hanover Square. She died in 1907 in Wandsworth.
- John Frederick Brayne Bellingham. b. Jun 1865 in Wrexham St. Giles (ref 11b 370). He appears to have died before 1881 but the record has not yet been found.
- William Augustus Harvey Bellingham, b. c. 1855
in New Brunswick, Canada. He is recorded in the 1871 Census when he was living at
home. Thereafter he lived abroad working as an engineer with the British Municipal

- Agnes Harriet Prentice, b. c. 1822, Newcastle-on-Trent and bap 29 Nov 1822 at St. Andrews
Church, Newcastle-on-Tyne. Her uncle Samuel left her a legacy of £100 in his Codicil, but since
she wasnot mentioned in the Will itself he may not have been particularly fond of her and perhaps
did not know her well. She became a Stay Maker in Bungay where she gave birth to an illegitimate
daughter:
- Eliza Adkin Prentice, bap.1849 at Bungay St. Mary's Church.
In 1851 Harriet Agnes was living at 89, Mill Lane, in the Parish of Holy Trinity in Bungay while her daughter was living with a wet nurse elsewhere in Bungay. Ian Prentice relates that he has not been able to trace anyreference to her or her daughter in the St. Catherine's House records so it is possible that they emigrated or that Eliza Adkin was adopted and changed her name;
- John Prentice, bap 2 Dec 1824, Bungay Independent Church. May have d. young.
- Eliza Prentice, b. c. 1829. She was under age when she married in 1849, curiously
signed herself "Eliza Prentice" in 1853 when she was a witness at the marriage of
her sister, Sarah. Since there is no reference to Edwin's death between 1849 and 1853
it is possible that the couple had separated and she reverted to her maiden name.
However, the Codicil to Samuel's Will describes her as having recently
married Mr. Fawcett (actually Fossett). Since she was not mentioned in the main
part of Samuel's Will it would seem that she was not greatly liked by him. It is probable
that Sarah, Emily and Eliza were baptised in St. Andrews Church, Newcastle on Tyne but
the church register is so badly faded that few entries are at all legible.
She m. Edwin/Edward Fossett, a Stay Maker of Marylebone at Marylebone Parish Church on 26 Feb 1849. None of her family signed the register as witnesses, which is curious, and perhaps like her elder sister Harriet Agnes, she had become pregnant out of marriage. It is perhaps no coincidence that Harriet was also a Stay Maker. In 1850 they were living in Brooklyn, New York together with Alfred Fossett, presumably his brother, and wife Jane. They had at least one child:
- Edwin Fossett, b. late 1850 in NY.
- Emily Prentice, b. c. 1830, Exeter and bap. 11 Jul 1830 at Exeter St. Sidwell where John was a Private in the 3rd Dragoon Guards. In 1851 she was living in the St. Michael district of Bath as an apprentice embroiderer to Horatia James, a Silk Mercer, but she must have married or emigrated by 1861 as there is no record of her in the later Census or any reference to any marriage or death in England. Samuel left her a legacy of £100 in his Will, supplemented by £50 in the Codicil. She perhaps also immigrated to New York.

Letters of Administration were granted on 4 Dec 1833 to one of his creditors, Robert George Augustus Hillary after Charles' wife renounced them. His effects were worth £300 so he must have been living under quite some financial strains.
He m. Emma Brightly (aka Caroline Brightly) c. 1820, but by May, 1831 they were becominge stranged and a separation was threatened. His mother, Sarah, made a Codicil to her Will to provide for Emily and the children at the expense of Charles if they separated. . Emma was b. 22 Feb 1788, Eccles, England (per Ian Prentice, email, 16 Jul 2011) and d. 1865 in England. She was the dau. of Charles and Mary Brightly.
- Note: Ian Prentice's email of 16 Jul 2011 relates that Charles Brightley was a Printer
and died in 1821, leaving a Will which made but brief mention of Charles and Emily, and his wife who died
two years later did not even mention them. She is rather pointedly not mentioned by name in Samuel's
Will either because he felt animosity towards her because of the marital difficulties that his brother had
had or because she was starting to show signs of the insanity from which she suffered at the end of her
life. She was buried in unconsecrated ground as a Dissenter in Brompton Cemetery on 18 Mar 1865
having died at Hanwell Lunatic Asylum. One of her sisters, Heloise Younger was buried in the same
plot at Brompton Cemetery on 3 Dec 1878, having died at 28 Denmark Road, Cold Harbour Lane,
age 84, as was her daughter Emily.

He qualified as a Surgeon at University College in London in 1845 where he was awarded two gold medals and gained his MRCS in 1857; in 1858 he was practising in Cheltenham, his address being 2, Oxford Villas.
He married Rose Timmins in Cheltenham on 2nd. October, 1844 when he was living at 1, Oxford Villas, Cheltenham. She was living at 1, Jersey Place in Cheltenham and was born in Liverpool in 1823 but was living in Cheltenham, the daughter of George Timmins, a Commander in the Royal Navy and Mary Sayer.

From his uncle Samuel's Will, it would appear that he was given a lot of help and support by Samuel when he was young and the bequests in his will would have helped Charles to set himself up and have the opportunity to 'botanise' abroad in a way that he would have otherwise found difficult.
The 1851 Census record him as living at 2, Oxford Villas, aged 30 with his wife, Rose, aged 28 and their son George aged 4, born in Cheltenham. However, in 1861 the Census records the house as being empty, suggesting that the family was abroad. He is last recorded in the Directory of Surgeons in 1858, with his address given as 2, Oxford Villas and being a member of the Botanical Society of London and a Fellow of the Linnean Society, having a deep interested in Botany. He was not registered in 1859, the year when all Surgeons had to meet the national standard of Royal College of Surgeon certification: those who did not have this qualification, as Charles may not, either had to re-qualify, retire, change profession or move abroad.
In fact he emigrated to Australia in 1864, according to Ray Desmond's "Dictionary of British and Irish Botanists and Horticulturalists" but a letter sent to Joseph D. Hooker at Kew Gardens dated 29 Dec 1868 stated that he left England in 1865 after having lived in Jersey for a time in order to carry out his botanical studies. This date is confirmed by the entry about him in A Biographical Register 1788 - 1939 compiled and edited by H.J. Gibbney and Ann G. Smith (ANU Canberra 1987). This entry states that he practiced as a surgeon in Woolongabba after arriving in Brisbane in 1865 and became a member of the Board of Immigration, the Board of Health and the Queensland Medical Board.
He continued to work as a Botanist and studied ferns and grasses. He is mentioned in the Australian Association for the Advancement of Science Proceedings 1909 (12 p. 381). In 1869 he was intending to apply for the post of Superintendent of Mauritius Botanic Gardens and wrote several letters to Joseph Hooker about how to apply and asking for his assistance; he clearly did not obtain this position however.

16.10. Manning Prentice, b. 7 Apr 1759, Bungay and d. 30 May 1836, Stowmarket.
On 5 Dec 1782 at Wrentham, Suffolk, he m. Katherine Oliver, b. 1755 and d. 24 Feb 1832. The following narrative is from an internet website discussing the early prominent citizens of Stowmarket:
- It was Thomas`s grandson, Manning Prentice, who first came to this town. This Manning who we should call Manning the first, because the name occured in every generation from then on, married Catherine Oliver of Wrentham the daughter of the Rev. James Oliver. On his Memorial in the Congregational Church in Stowmarket dated 1836 it was stated that Manning had been "upwards of 50 years in this place" so he probably arrived in the mid 1780`s, He was certainly here in 1790 when he witnessed the will of John Ball a miller of this town, and Manning is described then as a Grocer.
Manning had premises in the Market place where Superdrug and Dewhursts the butchers is now. Manning had been a member of Bungay Independent Church and in Stowmarket he set about building up the church Here which was at that time at a low ebb with a series of pastors who did not remain long. He was one of the first two deacons and for the rest of his life was a pillar of the church.
In about 1800 he founded the Sunday school which by 1805 had 130 children, this would have been the only school that many of the children would have known.
Manning must have made himself useful in other areas of the towns life as well, he is mentioned in the Ipswich Journal in 1816 as being Clerk to the trustees of the Gipping Navigation & in 1818 as a treasurer to the Stow Association for Prosecuting Felons. The church he would have known was still the original building founded early in the 18th century. This was to be replaced by a new building in the middle of the 19th century, this building was unfortunately completely demolished by a bomb in the last war along with the the memorials to Manning and his family, and was replaced by the present building on the same site.
Manning`s children married into the families of fellow church members including the Fison`s, Harwoods and Tailers, forming a tight social unit based on the church and on trade. He had 3 daughters and 3 sons, 1 son another Manning died in his twenties. Leaving Thomas and William to carry on and expand the families trading activities in the town.

16.20. Thomas Prentice, b. 14 Sep 1794 and d. 19 Jul 1852. The Prentices were in the corn trade, and both they and the Isaacs, into which their daughter, Sarah, married, were Congregationalists. Thomas formed the firm of Prentice and Co. at navigation Wharf, as well as running the towns gasworks they were corn and coal merchants, maltsters and dealt in chemical manure.
From this last aspect of the business developed Messrs Prentice Brothers run by Thomas`s sons Manning III and Eustace. This company employed about 40 people in 1874 and were described as "manufacturers of dissolved bones, superphosphates & special manures". This was an industry that had been developed in the county by amongst others the Fisons and in fact the Prentice company was eventually taken over by Fisons who as we have seen the Prentices were related to by marriage. In the 1840`s Thomas left the church & joined the Plymouth Brethren.
A second company formed by the sons of Thomas Prentice was The Patent Gun Cotton Co. established about 1863 on the site that is now part of the I.C.I. factory. It was here on 11th August 1871 that an explosion occurred at 2 pm that shook the town, blowing out windows in the town and Haughley station some three miles away and being heard as far away as Diss
Many people were killed and injured including Edward Prentice (son of Thomas) and his nephew William who were helping to haul boxes of cartridges away from the resulting fire when a second explosion occurred killing them both. No trace of the remains of Edward were found other than a battered gold watch found later, it`s hands stopped at 5 minutes past three the time of the second explosion.
Miss Susan Prentice, Edward`s sister, wrote in her diary "this is the most terrible day of our lives ... Papa saw William blown to pieces & Edward too. William had only just arrived from Heidelburg University & had called to see Papa before coming home. All laughter has left our house. Will Papa ever smile again I wonder. His sadness enfolds us all." In fact her father, Manning III. died a few years later in 1875, of a broken heart it is said. (See Fn. 1 for information about the house now.)

If you have any information which can help us identify any of the folks mentioned
Following is another letter about Verhandah House:
Dear Mr.Dewald
I have been looking at the website and records of Mr Terry Gilbert-Fellows left us at Verandah House. We moved to Verandah House nearly two years ago and we would like to continue to build up a historical picture of what life was like to the Prentice family. Since we have been here we have restored the building that was getting very tatty and leaky. We have a new slate roof and restored all the sash windows and rewrired to bring the house into the 21st century without losing its appeal and character.
It is still a guest house with a 4* rating by the Visit Britain Tourist Board. We have a website at www.verandahhouse.co.uk We would be delighted if we could get some more information or pictures of any of the family and the house.
Hope to hear from anyone in the meantime my husband and myself thank you in advance.
Kindest Regards
Suzanne and Gianfranco Neroni

Living with their family in 1901 was John Henry Watling's mother, Maria Watling, b. c. 1832, Norfolk.
Note: Donna Michele's email of 6 Aug 2011 reads in part to add an explanation:
"...My grandfather was Richard Sydney Prentice. He was registered as Richard Sydney Goldsmith at
birth [on 5 May 1888] because his mother, Lucretia Sarah, was separated from her first husband, John
Goldsmith, and although she was in a relationship with William Prentice, she was still technically married
to Goldsmith - hence Richard's Goldsmith surname (despite him being the son of William Prentice..."
. They had a daughter:

Good afternoon I came across the Prentice site by accident or so I believe.
I live at Verandah House (formerly Verandah Cottage) in Stowmarket UK and
for some time this house belonged to the Prentice family. Its roots go back
to 1720 and there is a story which I cannot totally verify and it goes like
this:-
The Prentice family owned some mineral deposits on the East Anglian coast
and this substance was used as agricultural fertiliser. The family
prospered and moved into milling -chemicals- gun cotton manufacture. They
supported the local unity church but the gun cotton factory proved to be a
major problem in that a huge explosion August 1872 destroyed large parts of
the Town. The prentice family were obviously socially responsible people
and paid out nine shillings in the pound on all the town damage. This
almost bankrupted them but they had three things worth much more than gold-
Three daughters of marriagable age.
One daughter married a MUNTON the local Maltsters one Married a FISON
(fisons agricultural-Fisons Pharmaceutical- Beechams) and the third married
a COURTAULD (British Nylon Spinners-Courtaulds- ICI) and we believe that
the romances flourished around the piano in our dining room.
We have early photographs of the family dated 1891 on display in our
entrance hall and there are a number of photoraphs on our web site
www.verandah-house.co.uk
I would be very interested if anyone can through further light on this link.
Best Wishes
Terry J. Gilbert - Fellows
