James William Prentice of Milton, Kent, England
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Fall 2011 and Revised 21 Jul 2011

We received from Karen Prentis, in her email of 20 Jul 2011, information about the Family of William Prentice of Milton, Kent, England, and his descendants. To it we have added information found in census records, LDS records and Ancestry.com. Here is what we have so far.:

1. Thomas Prentice, perhaps b. c. 1795-1800 and at an unknown location. The only information located is in the LDS Family Search which gives only the name but does not provide any birth information. By about 1826 he and his family were living in Milton, Kent, England where his son, James, was born.

He m. Louisa. We have no further information about her. Thomas and Louisa had 1 or more children, including:

  1. James William Prentis was b. c. 1826 in Milton, Kent, England. . . . . . . [2]

2. James William Prentis was b. c. 1826 in Milton, Kent, England. The LDS Family Search says he was chr. 28 Jan 1827, Milton by Gravesend, Kent, although Karen Prentis' email of 214 Jul 2011 says that "for some reason my Dad and I thought it was Milton near Sittingbourne."

James d. Oct 1869, Medway, per Ancestry.com . "Medway" apparently refers to a geographic area which includes the towns of Rochester and Chatham. For more about Medway, see http://www.historicmedway.co.uk/

James m. Elizabeth Ann Barnard. She was b. 1833, Rochester, Kent, and d. there Jun 1880. An Ancestor Chart for her can be found at Ancestry.com . In the 1871 census she, and her son, Edward, are living with the family of William and Julia Barnard in St. Nicholas, Kent, and is called a "sister", apparently a sister to William Barnard since Ancestry.com gives her maiden surname as "Barnard.".

Note: 1871 census: William I. Barnard (b. c. 1845, Rochesterr, Kent) and his wife, Julia Violetta Wilkins (b. Feb 1844, Chatham, Kent), in St. Nicholas, Kent

James and Elizabeth had 1 or more children, including:

  1. Edward Prentis, b. 1861, Rochester, Kent. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [3]

3. Edward Prentis, b. 1861, Rochester, Kent. In the 1871 census he living with his mother Elizabeth, in the family of William and Julia Barnard in St. Nicholas, Kent, and is William's "nephew".

He m. Sarah. Ref: 1891 census. Children:

  1. Edward William Prentis, b. 23 Apr 1883 in Rochester, Kent. . . . . . . . . . . . . [4]

4. Edward William Prentis, b. 23 Apr 1883 in Rochester, Kent (per Karen Prentis, granddaughter, email, 20 Jul 2011) and d. 1 Sept 1943 of 25, Campden Rd., Gillingham, did not leave a Will.

He m. Wilhelmina in 1906 in Medway. Children:

  1. Wilhemina Prentis, b. She was b. 23 Aug 1906, Girvan, Ayrshire, lived in Gillingham, Kent, and d. 1986 (per Karen Prentis, above) Chatham.
  2. George Herbert Prentis, b. Dec 1885; d. 9 July 1943 without any Will; of 29 Albert Road, Chatham. He m. Elizabeth; Nellie Isabel, b. Mar 1888.

Who is Thomas Prentis and who are his parents?

A search of our available databases has not yet answered that question. However, we have found some possible clues:

The 1841 census shows living in Milton, Kent, where Thomas was living at the 1826 birth of his son, James William Prentis, were Sarah Prentis , age 70 (b. c. 1771, Kent) and Elizabeth Prentis, age 25 (b. c. 1816, Kent). One might infer that Elizabetth was Sarah's daughter, or perhaps daughter in law.

The less common "Prentis" spelling suggests that the 1771 Sarah might be the mother of Thomas Prentice who was perhaps b. c. 1795-1800, and that the 1816 Elizabeth might be Thomas' sister.

We note also that the 1841 census in Milton, Kent, shows a John Prentis, age 22 (b. c. 1819, Kent). He appears in the home of Elizabeth Ring, age 60 (b. c. 1781, Kent), perhaps as a lodger. The 1819 birth year suggests that he may be a brother to the 1816 Elizabeth Prentis.

Additional research is continuing.
