By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Spring 2011 and Revised 4 Feb 2011

Dale J Gatherum-Goss, Email: dalensue@bigpond.net.au, in his emails of 1 Feb 2011, generously provided the Prentice family tree set out below for Ann Prentice of East WrethamNorfolks, which is a few miles to the north-east of Thetford, so small it may not appear on a a viewer's map. A tentative family tree is as follows:

1. Edward Prentice may have been b. in the 1750s, perhaps in East Wrentham, Norfolk, where his daugher, Ann was born.

He m. Eleanor according to the christening record of his daughter, Ann. They had 1 or more children, including:

  1. Ann Prentice, chr. 19 Apr 1778, East Wrentham, Norfolk, England. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]

2. MARY ANN1 PRENTICE was b. 19 Apr 1778 in East Wretham, Norfolk, England, and d. 25 Jan 1854 in East Harling, Norfolk, England.

She m. SAMUEL ELENOR. He was born in 1771 in Old Buckenham, Norfolk, England, and d. 7 Jan 1855 in East Harling, Norfolk, England.

Notes for Mary Ann Prentice: There is a Harriet Prentice, daughter of Ann Prentice born in East Wretham on 25 Nov 1798. She made her mark as the informant and as present at his death.

Death Notes:

  • Mary's daughter in law, Susan (probably Susanna Bloomfield, wife of Henry Elmer, below), made her mark as being the informant and present at Mary's death.
  • Death cert confirms that Mary was the wife of samuel Elenor, labourer.
  • Notes for Samuel Elenor:

Samuel Elenor and Mary Ann Prentice had the following children:

  1. (perhaps) HARRIET PRENTICE, daughter of an Ann Prentice born in East Wretham on 25 Nov 1798.
  2. GEORGE ELENOR was born in 1801 in Norfolk, England (based on age at burial). He died on 5 Oct 1867 in East Harling, Norfolk, England. In one of his marriages, George notes that his father was Samuel Elener.
  3. SAMUEL ELENOR was born on 7 Nov 1806 in East Harling, Norfolk, England. Samuel possibly went to Ontario Canada as there is a fellow who died there, born in Norfolk abt 1806. Further follow up required.
  4. MARY ANNE ELMER was born on 22 Nov 1808 in East Harling, Norfolk, England. She married DANIEL MARJORAM on 19 Dec 1825 in Norwich, Norfolk, England. He was born in 1804. He died in Jun 1884 in Yarmouth, Norfolk, England.
  5. HENRY ELMER was born on 11 Mar 1811 in East Harling, Norfolk, England. He died on 18 Nov 1854 in East Harling, Norfolk, England. He married SUSANNA BLOOMFIELD on 22 Jun 1833 in Coney Weston, Suffolk, England, daughter of Zephaniah Bloomfield and Mary Plummer. She was born on 12 Jan 1814 in Coney Weston, Suffolk, England. She died on 12 Jan 1857 in East Harling, Norfolk, England (White Hart Street). . . . . . . . . . . . . [3]
  6. DANIEL ELMER was born on 7 Nov 1815 in East Harling, Norfolk, England.
  7. ELLEN ELMER was born on 18 Apr 1819 in East Harling, Norfolk, England. She married STEPHEN BROCK on 27 Oct 1844 in East Harling, Norfolk, England. He was born in 1794 in England (based on age at marriage).

3. HENRY ELMER (Mary Ann1 Prentice) was born on 11 Mar 1811 in East Harling, Norfolk, England.

The informant was was her daughter, Harriett, who was present.

The Suffolk marriage index indicates that Henry was of Euston when he married Susan Bloomfield. Euston is next-door to Barnham and is another one of the parishes that meet at Rymer Point. Both Henry & Susanna made their mark on the marriage registry book. The wedding was witnessed by Michael Whitaker and William Jonham and performed by Watson Joseph Thornton (Curate). The banns were read on 26 May by WH Thornton; and on 2nd June and 9th June by the Rector G. Hunt.

Henry Elmer and Susanna Bloomfield had the following children:

  1. GEORGE ELMER was born on 14 Dec 1834 in Rymer, Suffolk, England (This is the christening date). He died on 16 Jun 1885 in Murmungee, Victoria, Australia. He married MARY ANN JESSUP on 15 Feb 1856 in East Harling, Norfolk, England (Parish Church), daughter of Unknown and Maria Jessup. She was born on 25 Sep 1836 in Norwich, Norfolk, England. She died on 17 Jul 1917 in Six Mile, Victoria, Australia.. . . . . . . . . . . . . [4]
  2. SAMUEL ELMER was born on 26 Feb 1837 in Barnham, Suffolk, England. He died on 11 Sep 1853 in East Harling, Norfolk, England.
  3. HARRIETT ELMER was born on 22 Jul 1838 in Rymer, Suffolk, England (per Christening register). She died on 06 Jan 1862 in East Harling, Norfolk, England. She married (1) THOMAS TILLOTT RUST on 22 Jun 1861 in East Harling, Norfolk, England. He was born on 03 Apr 1831 in East Harling, Norfolk, England. She married (2) UNKNOWN. . . . . . . . . . . . . [5]
  4. ZEPHANIAH ELMER was born on 04 Oct 1840 in East Harling, Norfolk, England. He died on 02 Dec 1861 in East Harling, Norfolk, England. At home in the 1841 census. Notes for Zephaniah Elmer: Zephaniah was 8 months old at the time of the 1841 Census.

4. GEORGE ELMER (Henry2, Mary Ann1 Prentice) was born on 14 Dec 1834 in Rymer, Suffolk, England (This is the christening date). He died on 16 Jun 1885 in Murmungee, Victoria, Australia. George was illiterate. On the shipping records he was noted as being able to read only. An old photo of george, as remembered by Ivy Elmer, his grand daughter, showed him as very tall with thick black hair and a beard. The 1858/1859 rates book (entry no. 686) at Beechworth says that George was an owner and occupier of the land with a building at Spring Creek of Newtown. The rateable value was 8 shillings. We also found a similar entry for the following year but the rateable value had dropped.

He married MARY ANN JESSUP on 15 Feb 1856 in East Harling, Norfolk, England (Parish Church), daughter of Unknown and Maria Jessup. She was born on 25 Sep 1836 in Norwich, Norfolk, England. She died on 17 Jul 1917 in Six Mile, Victoria, Australia. James Adam's may or may not be Mary Ann's father as she used her mother's maiden name of Jessup on some of her documents.

Also, there was a Mary Ann who was "Base Born" according to the Hockham Parish registers: from:the Hockham Parish Register and have the following: Mary Ann, Base Born, 25 Sept 1836 Bapt 5 March 1837. Mother Maria Jessup. Maria and James were not married until 25 December 1836 This would be why Mary Ann insisted she was a JESSUP. On the shipping records she was noted as being able to read only. If we have the right Mary Ann in the 1851 census (I am yet to be 100% convinced) she went to a girl's school run by Hannah Larke at Cow Hill, Norwich, St Giles which is where she can be found at the 1851 census.

George & Mary Ann came to Australia on the ship, "Arthur the Great" in 1856 and were both noted as natives of Norfolk, England and being of the CoE. They came out under the "Assistance" scheme for British immigrants. George was employed by the Botannical Gardens when he arrived from England at an initial rate of pay of 8/0.

On the shipping records she was noted as being able to read only.

Mary Ann's grand daughter, Ivy Elmer, remembered Mary Ann as a very quiet person who rarely spoke about her life in Norfolk and who looked like Queen Victoria...short and with a similar figure. Her grand daugher, Ivy Elmer, said that Mary Ann spoke of the horror of the Crimean War.

Mary Ann & George travelled to the Beechworth goldfields via horse & dray. They were amazed at the size of the town (mainly canvas tents) and later travelled over the Buckland Gap to Murmungee (6 or 7 miles away) where they built a home and became dairy farmers. The house was a 4 room house. 3 bedrooms and 1 front room. The house faced west and later a similar house was built about 3 feet from the back facing south. Ivy remembered a table in the front room covered with red plush velvet with a bobble fringe all around it. On the table was photos of the family taken when they were young.

They cleared some trees and planted an orchard. Mary Ann lived on this property until she died. They also kept fowls, geese, ducks, turkeys and 2 beautiful peacocks which never seemed to sleep. A fair amount of shillings. We also found a similar entry for the following year but the rateable value had dropped to 7 shillings.

A fair amount of oats and barley was grown and stored for the animals in times of drought or severe winters.

Mary Ann loved feeding the poultry wheat & maize both night & morning. Mary Ann had only one holiday.... a week in Melbourne which she did not enjoy. She also kept doves, a cockatoo, a parrott, and a magpie along with her cat and horses. When Mary Ann's daughter, Harriet, died, she took one of the chidren (Barbara) in to live with her. She also took in Sam 's(Moses Samuel Elmer) children after the house fire and Frances left. Mary Ann would have been in her 60's by then.

Mary Ann bought a gramaphone (His Masters Voice) which was the first in the district and neighbors from all around came to hear it. Mary Ann did not visit others very much at all...not even her daughter who lived 10 minutes walk away. Mary Ann's kitchen was a large one in the winter she used to sit by the fire in her rocking chair and in summer, by the door for the breeze. Mary Ann did not like the girls crossing their legs when they sat down; nor liked the children to whistle.

The 1903 Electoral Roll shows Mary Ann living in the Murmungee area with an occupation of "home duties"

We also found that George registered a "claim for 4" at Running Creek on July 28, 1859 entry number 498 on page 121 of the Mining claims and water rights book.

Also in the scrapbook is a public notice appearing in the Argus newspaper from 1920 re the estate. Mary Ann & George travelled to the Beechworth goldfields via horse & dray.

The depression never really affected the family because of William's job. Jean remembers William as a gentle, reserved man. He had blue eyes and light brown hair. He was about 5' 6" maybe 5' 7". William was not interested in football at all. Being a strict Methodist, he neither drank alcohol nor smoked. One occassion, when Jean swore (she said "blast") after work one night, William just looked at her and quietly asked if she felt better now.

William and Olivia had 1 or more children and 1 or more grandchildren.

Who is Edward Prentice and who are his Parents?

Although only an educated guess for now, Edward Prentice might be a son of John Prentice and Sarah Gates who are #4 in our Winter 2000 article entitled Prentices of Thetford, East Wretham, Norfolk, England

They had a son (#4vii) whose name is not presently known and who was b. in he 1750s, d. before 1783 having married Eleanor, Ann's mother's, and who was living in Brandon that year and died in 1792 leaving letters of administration.

If you have any information about the folks mentioned in this article, please contact us at dewald@prenticenet.com.

Fn. l: Note that there is only a 10 year age difference between the father, James, and the 2 sons. Ian Prentice advises that his original database on which the supposed father, John, b. 1787, was lodged was unfortunately lost when his computer crashed not long ago. The relationship between the father and sons needs to be clarified.
